WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1924 ~) COLOR SCHEMES mt NAPANEE ™ 5x ems | DUTCH@KITCHENET We have heard it said that the kitchen is the factory of the home, 4 W. ' . S . » but that is no reason why it should The orld s Finest Kitchen Cabinet look like a factory. It is well known that color may cheer and stimulate, create coolness and spaciousness and perform all sorts of magical trans- formations, and every housewife must : s 4 agree that in no room of the house ecia e IN OO em -- WHEN IN are such transformations more needed EVANSTON and more helpful. Do what we like to acquire a sanitary and well-equip- ped kitchen, something will be lack- ing if it is to be a steely-white hos- pital-like room in its aspect. To be sanitary does not mean to be white. Color and beauty do not in any sense imply lack of hygienic conditions. Indeed they add so much to the morale of the toiler, that the cheerless, drab kitchen, be it ever so clean, has completely lost favor and is responsible for such dislike of kitchen work as still persists. Since the stove in a kitchen usual- ly supplies more heat to the room than is sometimes comfortable, it is well to plan cool colors for this room. Blues, greens, grays, in combinatiins and in their various mixtures are de- lightful. They have the further ad- vantages of making the kitchen seem larger than it is, a thing much in their favor at a time when kitchens are deliberately made small to save motion. For the northern exposure, a more vellowish-green is desirable as this aives an effect of warmth and sun. The tans and gold colors also do this even more emphatically, but tend to reduce the apparent size of the room. A plain gray wall is insipid, but may be used if color is present in other parts of the equipment. A stenciled, whimsical border at the upper edge of the walls gives a decided interest to the kitchen. Cold White Not Necessary Tile may be had in most popular colors, and paint is, of course, as much paint in colors as it is in white, and has the same characteristic advan- tages, so there is no practical neces- sity for cold white. It is equally possible to have -at- tractive color in the standing wood- work and cabinets of the kitchen, not the cold white enamel, of the dingy brown finish, but really striking things such as one sees in the break- fast room sets that have become so popular. Their refreshing directness of color is always stimulating and charming. Patterns in the kitchen, the lin- oleum, etc., should be simple yet de- cided. We do not want subtlety in the kitchen. We do not want subtlety in the kitchen. Stimulation is more readily had in bold, frank, outstand- ing qualities. Anything with inter- woven, curly pattern would dupe us with beguiling shadows, and would be more confusing than restful. Those surfaces like the wonderful steel kitchen cabinets in white, the porcelain table and sink, may by all means be of white, but let there be color in the linoleum, in the walls, in whatever there is of woodwork, in the window curtain, the toweling, the countless places that offer opportun- ity for color interest and give char- acter to the simplest rooms. Do not have a hodge-podge of different col- ors in each of these places, but select one to emphasize in all the large sur- faces, and one or perhaps two otthers, brighter and stronger, for accents. The repetition of the same color gives that satisfying interrelation. . The thing is to have well-selected, well- placed color and to avoid extremes, either of cold, drab white, or riotous r color that confuses. NEW WRINKLE TO GET SLEEP OUT- CF-DOORS A sizable second-story balcony may be successfully converted into a sleeping porch. This need be nothing more than a projecting porch sup- ported on brackets, or built on top of any flat portion of the roof. A dormer room often offers good possibilities for conversion into an outdoor sleep- ing arrangement if windows may be put into the sides. A good location for a sleeping porch is a corner of the second story, re- serving only enough space for the bed. This is just like an ordinary bedroom, but smaller, and may be fitted with wide openings or with rows of casement windows. When these are open, the room is in effect an out- of-doors porch, but one that may be completely closed against the weather. All sleeping porches should connect with a small dressing room, and with a bathroom, too, if possible. Make it a point to these remarkable, white enamel |: i = our stor if only to "look."
