4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1924 EXHIBIT MODEL FOR OUR HERO MEMORIAL A model of the proposed memorial to the men and women of Winnetka who served in the World war will be on display next week at the Winnetka State Bank and the Winnetka Trust and Savings Bank, as well as at sev- eral other places in the village. Sam Otis designed the memorial sketch. For more than three years the plan for this memoria] has been in process of formulation. At first there were a large number of proposed memorial designs. which the various committee workers and other thought suitable By investigating in other cities where memorials had been established and by getting the advice of architects and artists, it was finally decided tha! a permanent rostrum and flag staff erected on the village green, was most appropriate and feasible. Winnetka artists and architects were asked to submit designs for the proposed memorial. From the large number of designs submitted, Edward Bennett, John Root and Mrs. Franklin Rudolph, who acted as the judges of selection, selected the one submitted by Mr. Otis. This design has been approved by the Gold Star parents, the Village council, the Community House council and the Winnetka Im- provement association, according to Mrs. W. J. Huddle, who is on the committee arranging for the memorial. A report from the committee ar- ranging for the memorial states that Winnetka has been deliberating on this matter because of the recent building of the Skokie school and the addition to the Community House. Now that these undertakings have been completed, the committee be- lieves that it is advisable to erect the memorial. All the people in the vil- lage are urged to see the model de- sign. COMMUNITY HOUSE, MOVIES | a What is the immutable code of the sea? And what happens when sea- men dare to disobey it? You'll thrill to the answers when you see "Code of the Sea" which will be shown at Community House next Tuesday at matinee and evening performances. "Code of the Sea" is described as a rip roarin' action tale written by Byron Morgan who wrote all the famous Wallie Reid automobile stor- ies. Rod LaRocque and Jacqueline Logan take the leading parts, La- Rocque as the coward whose fear of the sea is even greater than his love for the heroine, but who "comes through" when the supreme test ar- rives. Next Friday a real treat is in store for the local "fans" when Ernest Tor- rence will appear in "The Side Show of Life" which is an adaptation of William J. Locke's "The Mounte- bank." The story opens introducing us to the clown Andrew Lackaday, known as Petit Patou, and his dog Prim- pin, mainstays of a small, French traveling circus. The dog is killed, and Andrew takes a pretty young girl into his act. War is declared. Lack- aday enlists, leaving the girl in care of a friend and promising to return as soon as possible. He is quickly promoted for brav- ery and through his young adjutant meets a charming titled lady and falls in love with her but remembers Radiola REQ. U3 PAT. He goes back. Lady Auriol (Miss Nils- son) follows and sees him as a cir- cus clown. She sees the girl, Elodie, and believes she understands. Then comes a novel twist that makes "The Side Show of Life" one of the most interesting screen vehi- cles seen in many a day. Which girl does Lackaday marry? Does he remain a clown or go back to a life of social ease, (he's a cul- tured English gentleman you know)? These are the questions the picture will answer at Community House next [riday. STUDY CLASS MEETS The study class of the North Shore Catholic Woman's League will have its first meeting Tuesday, November 11, at the home of Mrs. William Brown of 1173 Scott avenue, at 2 o'clock. Supper will be served at the outset of the meeting. "This is a most important meet- ing," it is announced, "and it is hoped that there will be a large attendance.
