, 19 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1924 Motoring to Florida? If So, Here's a Recommended Route Chicago Motor Club Gives Public Benefit of Special Road Survey Once each year the question is asked, "What is the best route to Florida?" Once each year there is a vast difference of opinion not only among those who travel the various routes, but among the various cities on the several routes. Strenuous efforts are being made by the communities in Kentucky and Ten- nessee to map out and make a route that can be called good all the way from the north straight to Florida, according to the touring bureau of the Chicago Motor club, and .the route that is first in the field will be the one that will re- ceive the patronage of motor tourists, who wish to spend their winter 'in the south. Car Makes Survey Within the past month a road car of the Chicago Motor club made the com- plete survey of the inside routes from Chicago to Florida, and on the judg- ment of the chief road surveyor this organization now recommends the route through Cincinnati, Paris, Winchester, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Macon to Lake City, Florida, from which point there are roads leading to all parts of the latter state. From Cincinnati to Willams- town is a newly finished road with one or two grade separations of old macadam and which with these exceptions will be found a reasonably good road. Even the grade separations will not cause trouble in wet weather. From Williams- town it is necessary to turn eastward to Falmouth over a seventeen-mile ma- cadam highway that is somewhat worn, but from Falmouth south the motorist travels an old tarbound macadam road through Paris and Winchester and takes a ferry across the river into Richmond. It is natural that most people would be tempted to go from Paris to Lexing- ton, but because of construction work south of Lexington it would be necessary to return from Lexington directly to Winchester, back onto the main highway, thereby doubling the distance between Paris and Winchester. The construction work south of Lexington covers a stretch of three and one-half miles which will be impossible to negotiate at the present time, because it is being graded so as to settle during the winter. Numerous Detours Here The Louisville-Nashville route which is known as the west Dixie highway can- not be recommended for this year, be- cause of numerous detours and bad stretches that cannot be put in good Telephone 1098 ALEC W. KYLE Contracter PLUMBING--HEATING 674 Vernon Avenue GLENCOE, ILLINOIS condition before some time next year. On the route that is mapped out for this year's travel there is just south of Berea a three and one-half mile stretch of very rough road at the present time, but this is now being improved and the worst sections of it will be somewhat elimin- ated before winter sets in. From the Castle Rock river there is a five and one-half mile project being surfaced with concrete, and about four miles of this should be completed some time early next year. At the present time the de- tour makes an extra mile and one-half to cover. From London to Corbin the entire dis- tance is over a detour of dirt, but there is every probability that the improve- ment of the main road will be finished this season. Between Corbin and Bar- bourville there is a very bad stretch of road that is used as a detour while sev- eral thousands of dollars were being spent to grade and maintain the regular route. The engineer announces that if the weather is favorable this will be largely finished during the winter, but that it is probable the detour must be used this season. Part of the money that was raised in the north to improve this road will be spent in maintaining the detour in as good a condition as possible. 30 Miles in Rough From Chattanooga to Knoxville there is approximately thirty-eight miles of poor road, but once Barbourville is passed nothing is to be feared, because the roads are good into Chattanooga by way of Tazewell, Morristown, Knox- ville and 'Sweetwater. The optional route from Knoxville to Macon is through Asheville and Greenville, and EX o) A ean Cy ~ Ege For Your Thanksgiving Decorations CUT FLOWERS Chrysanthemums, Pompons, Carnations, Roses, Sweet Peas, Calendulas Potted plants of all kinds at very lowest prices FRANK BOROVICKA 748 Center St. Phone Winnetka 283 FX: You Never Saw Any 'BETTER BLACK DIRT. Let us prove it. although there is a scenic route the sur- face is largely of earth or sand clay, and there is no distinct advantage in taking this road. From Chattanooga to Macon the road is practically all sand clay, generally in good condition with small detours in and out of Atlanta. The Louisville-Nashville road is under- going improvement rapidly. The road, from Mounteagle to Jasper and on to Whitwell, is being graded, but inasmuch as this calls for mountain work the pro- gress is necessarily slow, notwithstand- ing that the contractors are working on their project as fast as weather and the nature of the ground will permit. Be- tween Louisville and Nashville there is considerable construction work in pro- gress, but there are other parts that are badly worn and upon which no work is being done.
