Jn WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1924 21 PLAN GOLDEN RULE SUNDAY December 7 is Date of Relief Observance Twenty-four nations including the United States will observe Sunday, December 7, as Golden Rule day as a reminder of the urgent need of continued contributions for the feed- ing of two and a half million orphans and refugees in Persia, Armenia, Syria, Anatolia, Turkey and Greece. "International Golden Rule Sunday Isa test of our religion and our sin- cerity," its sponsors declare, "a day for measuring our lives by the uni- versally accepted standard of life. A day of plain living and high thinking and on that day all persons who be- lieve in the Golden Rule are asked, by way of remembrance, to partake of a simple meal and then, as a prac- tical demonstration, decide on an of- fering to help keep alive, shelter and train, the many thousands of children under American care in the Bible lands. "It is the occasion, in the words of President Coolidge who will ob- serve it, to bring to the minds of those who are prosperous, the charit- able requirements of those who are in adversity. "On December 7, the Golden Rule citizens of the world will be seated, figuratively, at the same table, par- taking of the same food, thinking the same thoughts and entering into a realization of the brotherhood of mankind. "These children of the Near East are international wards. They are the lawful legacy of the World war. They simply want a chance to live and we must continue the task of making that possible for the sake of world peace in the future. These children will be the leaders in the new Near East of tomorrow and with American ideals they will help make a better world and will preserve peace in what is now the plague spot of the universe. Protestant Seminary in $4,000,000 Fund Drive Ministers of forty-eight different denominations are banded together in a nation-wide movement to raise $4,000,000 for Union Theological Sem- inary in the City of New York. The local representative of the movement is Rev. Daniel Stecker, who "is "a graduate of the seminary. Union Seminary is the largest graduate school of theology in Amer- ica, and the only one that is both strictly interdenominational and with- out official connection with any uni- versity. It has informal affiliation with Columbia and New York uni- versities. This year the seminary has en- rolled 424 students who have gradu- ated fom various colleges and are preparing for the ministry in many denominations. Five demominations are represented on the seminary's board of directors, seven on its fac- ulty and thirty-nine in its student body. No such representative inter- denominational group exists else- where in America. The Union Sem- inary campaign is to be carried on throughout the country among the leading Protestant denominations. John D. Dockefeller, Jr., has already given $1,083,333 and "another friend has given $1,250,000 on condition that the entire $4,000,000 be raised. Read the Want-Ads Car Owners Are Advised About Wintertime Perils Colder weather and a knowledge of what this means to the car owner is the reason for a nation-wide warn- ing to motorists by the American Automobile association, according to Charles M. Hayes, president of the Chicago Motor club, the local af- filiation of the national car owners organizations. "The great increase in home build- ing locally is viewed as a reason for greater precaution on the part of the car owner during the cold weather season, since private homes mean private garages with all the dangers incident to operating motors in close quarters," Mr. Hayes says. "In .the A. A. A. message. car owners are urged to set their car- buretors for a rich mixture and to equip their cars with accessories that assist in starting to .the end that there may be less need to warm up the motor and thus less temptation to run the engine to the danger point before backing out into the open.
