'16 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1924 LO.O.F IN BUSY SEASON Degree Work Has Important Place on Program Saturday evening, November 15, a delegation of 40 Odd Fellows, members of Steel City lodge, of Gary, Ind. mo- tored to Wilmette to confer thé second degree on candidates of the A. T. Sher- man Lodge No. 892 and of Northbrook Lodge No. 1052. Shortly after their arrival the visitors were served a supper by the local broth- ers, assisted by the Sister Rebekahs, in the I. O. O. F. hall, Then, later in the evening, before a crowd that filled the large hall, the degree staff of the visiting delegation conferred the second degree on nine candidates in a manner described as: commendable and unique. After the conferring of the degree the team, dress- ed in natty uniforms, executed a series of complicated marches that were per- formed with exceedingly efficient skill. Membership Contest In order to help in increasing the mem- bership of A. T. Sherman Lodge No. 892, the lodge was divided early in the summer into two sections, one under the Noble Grand and the other under the Vice Grand. The side bringing in the larger number of candidates by January 1 is to be treated to a banquet by the losing side. At the present time the Vice Grand's side is in the lead. Under this competitive contest the membership is steadily increasing." After the first of the year the initiation fees are to be doubled, and the minimum age for caan- didates is to be lowered from 21 to 18 by order of the Sovereign Grand Lodge. : Last Thursday evening the third de- gree staff put on its work in a very creditable manner, conferring the degree on four candidates. The floor-work af- ter the degree was also well performed. "Appreciation Dinner" In appreciation of the numerous oc- casions on which the Sister Rebekahs have given valuable assistance and en- couragement in all undertakings of the Brother lodge, the latter will give them an "Appreciation Dinner" and enter- tainment in the lodge rooms on Saturday .evening, November 29, at 6:30 o'clock. The dinner is to be prepared and served entirely by Odd Fellows, and the enter- tainment is also to be given by talent from the lodge. The young Wilevansbrook encamp- ment, which was instituted last Septem- mer from Evanston, Wilmette, and Northbrook subordinate lodges, is pro- gressing remarkably. Many applica- tions for membership are being received, and the increasing attendance and en- thusiasm are becoming more evident at every meeting, it is explained. On No- vember 7, a staff from North Shore Encampment No. 142 initiated 14 of Wilevanbrook's candidates in the Patri- archal degree. Then, on November 21, these candidates were advanced to the Golden Rule degree by a very efficient staff, composed entirely of members liv- ing in Evanston. Given Ovation Considering the fact that this was the first attempt of the new encampment to put on a degree with a team of its own members, the Evanston members merit- ed the praise they received after the completion of the work. The brand new uniforms and regalia of the en- campment, which were used for the first time, added dignity to the impressive work of the team. It will now be up to the Wilmette members of the lodge to put on the Royal Purple degree, which they are planning to"do on De- cember 19, as the next meeting is to be devoted to the election of officers for the coming new year. Mr. and Mrs. Fred L. Workman, 222 Leicester road, and Mr. and Mrs. Merritt H. Dement of 337 Abbotts- ford road, are spending ten days at French Lick.
