8 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1924 'COVERED WAGON "HERE NEXT WEEK Film of Pioneers at Com- munity House "One of the greatest photoplays ever made, will be the popular verdict when the motion picture public sees James Cruze's colossal production, 'The Covered Wagon' shown . at Winnetka Community House Thursday, Friday, and Satur- day, December 4, 5 6," says Burton H. Atwood, Jr., director of Community pictures. "Providing a new standard of com- parison, 'The Covered Wagon' is an astounding romance of the days when the star of empire gleamed beacon- like in the western sky and when brave men and women risked their lives fearlessly in their effort to build up a mighty nation. "'The Covered Wagon' not only paints in indelible and realistic colors pictures of the west in its making, but it tells a love story of great sweetness--love in rumbling wagon trains amid hostile Indians, fierce prairie fires and with wild rides over shimmering sands and swollen streams. "Every character in 'The Covered Wagon' is a real human being. Fach represents the pride of American manhood and womanhood of pre- gold discovery days in California. Some are bad, others indifferent, but the majority are of noble texture, staunch and true. It is these human qualities which make the story of this tremendous production tense, ap- pealing and wonderfully effective as screen entertainment. "'The Covered Wagon' will enthrall every spectator. It isn't just one of those pictu. s every American ought to see, but will see. It is a photoplay which serves a double purpose. It entertains and instructs. It pleases both the eye and the mind. It is a screen masterpiece." Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Parents Make Study of Courses in Tenth Grade The tenth grade parents of the North Shore Country Day school mel at the school Tuesday evening under the chairmanship of Mrs. Raymond Durham. Both fathers and mothers were present. The subject especially under discussion was "The Advis- ability of a Fve-Year Course for Pupils Gifted in Music, Art, or Some Other Special Line." Mrs. John Broin, head of the Art work, presented an outline of the course in art, and spoke upon the "Place of Art in Our Right Develop- ment." She brought out especially the richness that a growth in appreci- ation and expression can bring into a child's life, and showed some of the results of natural expression in the child. Next, Miss Nina Babcock, head of the Music department, helped the parents to realize the opportunities in the school for development in both music appreciation and music expres- sion, the correlation of music with the other work, and the chances for bringing out the child in this field. Mrs. Earl Childs, as head of the tenth grade girls then explained the college requirements, showing the amount of work the children would have to carry each year under the four-year plan and under the five- year plan, with the idea of helping the parents who desired to have their children carry on special work in music or art or both, to decide on the course they would wish them to pursue.
