Castle, 635 Sherman' avenue, Ev- anston, kodak; Martha E. Farmer, 915 Elmwood avenue, Wilmette, kodak. In judging this contest the officials had a big job on their hands. For one thing, the excellent quality of the essays submitted as well as the cor- rect manner .in which the primers were designed made the task a big one. Then again, the accuracy of the investigations made by the pupils gave the job of judging a professional aspect. The judges were called upon to grade as closely as possible. The winning essays in the Sub- urban Electric league will now be forwarded to the national headquar- ters where the national judges will pass upon them for the national prizes. A $15,000 electric home, the first prize, and a number of college scholarships are the secondary prizes offered in the national contest. It is the belief of the officials judg- ing the contest that the essays sub- mitted will be on a par, if not above, those of any of the other leagues in the country. Contestants in the Sub- urban Electric league and in the local leagues can well expect to be awarded a share in the forthcoming national prizes. Local prizes will be awarded the winners at some school or public exercise to be held before Christmas --a fitting Christmas present in honor of the ingenuity of the authors. Cold Snaps Bring Damage to Hapless Automobiles Wintry blasts played havoc with motorists here during a recent cold snap, according' to a report of the mechanical first aid department of the Chicago Motor club. Frozen radi- ators and stiff engines increased the distress calls into the club one hun- dred per cent. Motorists are advised to use alcohol in their radiators--at 19 degrees the solution should be 20 percent, at 15 degrees 25 per cent, at 10 degrees 30 per cent, and if the thermometer should slip down to zero a 40 per cent solution will be needed. Chicago ) | Be Cautious in Buying Used Cars, Club Warns "Make sure that you are dealing with a financially responsible party when purchasing a used car," warns the latest bulletin issued by the legal department of the Chicago Motor club, If the seller is insolvent, the purchaser will be obliged to stand 'the loss if it develops that the car has been stolen. "And in this day of wholesale auto- mobile thefts, one cannot be too cautious. Even when the person from whom you buy a car is well known to you, and you have every reason to believe him thoroughly reliable, do not buy a car without some investiga- tion. "Remember the seller may have no idea that the car he is offering you is stolen property. Many motorists have lost their cars when the police discovered that their cars were stolen property; the safe way is to get the motor number and ask the police if any stolen car of that number has been reported. "It is also advisable to take the car to a mechanic to see that the numbers have not been altered. The purchaser of a used car may be deceived by an unscrupulous seller who will knock off several years of the car's age. The serial numbers tell the true story; get those numbers and call the local dealer, he will be able to tell you in what year the car was turned out of the factory."
