32 SORRY TO GIVE BUT ONE HEAD FOR FILM Being struck over the head with a vase, statue or jardiniere isn't always as funny as it seems. It is to laugh when it is done in the movies--if you are in the audience. It is not to laugh if you are the actor. In studio parlance these vases and statues are known as "breakaways," be- ing specially constructed for movie work and presumably delicate enough to be shattered by the slightest contact with anything as hard as human heads. However, the breakaway makers oc- casionally get a poor mixture of their clay and the vase hardens to a bust- proof texture. Many actors, who have been -break- away targets, will testify to the un- breakable qualities of a breakaway. Charles Gerrard is one.. During the production of "Her Temporary Hus- band," the comedy-drama which will be featured at Community House next Fri- day, Gerrard was supposed to do a Gi- braltar under a vase wielded by Owen Moore. The blow struck and Gerrard struck the floor. The breakaway was a breakaway. in name only. Blood trickled down the actor's head as he slowly picked himself up, and pro- duction was halted until Gerrard came to. A nasty knock--a smali laceration --and a splitting headache--but all in a day's work on the movie lot. Tuesday, December 23, Colleen Moore will appear in "Through the Dark," as- sisted by Forest Stanley. This is an adaption of one of Jack Boyle's well known 'Boston Blackie" stories. Mrs. A. S. MacKenzie Dies at Home of Her Daughter Mrs. A. S. MacKenzie passed away Thursday, December 4, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. A. Johnstone, 491 Hill road. Services were held from the home, the Rev. Leland Ho- bart Danforth, rector of the Church of the Holy Comforter at Kenilworth, officiating. Burial was at the North Shore cemetery. Mrs. MacKenzie was 83 years of age and came to Winnetka from Cali- fornia about a year ago to make her home with Mrs. Johnstone. Besides Mrs. Johnstone, she leaves a son and daughter in California, and three sisters and two brothers in the East. There are more telephones in the United States than there are peo- ple in Turkey. Winnetka Firemen Rushed to Glencoe Business Area Glencoe called on the Winnetka fire department for aid last Saturday after- noon, when the Glencoe Motor Sales company's garage at 668 Vernon ave- nue, directly across from the Glencoe Village hall caught fire. The Highland Park department was also called to the scene, the blaze which was started by a blow torch, proving very hard to handle. An estimate of the damage has not yet been received. A small fire caused by an overheated chimney at the home of Henry Scuns- man, 804 Illm street, called the firemen out Sunday morning. The fire was ex- t nguished with only slight damage.
