LC 4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 31, 1925 Mid - winter Dinner-Dance Is Given by Riding Club N Wednesday evening, January 28, O the Indian Hill Riding club held its first annual mid-winter dinner and dance at the Indian Hill club. seventy-five members and their guests were present for dinner and afterwards heard Major General George Harries, a veteran cavalryman of Indian campaigns and the Spanish-American and World wars, spin yarns of the service. In bidding the guests welcome, Colton Daughaday, the president of the club, told of the growth of the club from its inception, one year and ten months ago, to a membership now numbering 86. A well equipped stable has been built, and extensive bridal = paths maintained or built. Mrs. Donald T. McPherson spoke en- tertainingly on the club from the wom- en's view point. Godfrey H. Atkin was toastmaster. A novel feature of the evening was a motion picture representation of the thoroughbred in action in races, steeple- chases, and over high jumps. Captain Dick van Ingen of Fort Sheri- dan, who rode his celebrated "Gray Par- son" at the military exhibition and horse show given in Winnetka last fall by the riding club, was present at the dinner and gave the members a few pointers on schooling and riding jumpers. One reel of the motion pictures, made at Rochester, N. Y., showed Captain van Ingen riding Gray Parson over bars six feet six inches high, and his description of events from the audience was interest- ing. Pictures of General Pershing leading his cavalry into Mexico, riding through the Arc de Triomph in Paris, and in New York at the head of his victorious troops returning from overseas, ended this phase of the evening's program. --Q-- The Cherry and Oak Street circle met on Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Eugene Klaber of 467 Linden avenue. The speaker of the afternoon was Mrs. Charles Karnott, who associated with Dr. Grenfell in Labrador. She spoke in a very entertaining and interesting man- ner on the different aspects of house- keeping in New foundland. --Q-- Mrs. Howard van Sinderen Tracy of Hubbard Woods was a luncheon hostess at Indian Hill club Thursday in honor of Mrs. Charles Fisher who has just moved to Hubbard Woods from Balti- more. ---- "Mrs. Charles Klotz of Winnetka, 'who is vacationing in the southland, will as- sist Mrs. William Waller, Jr. at the sale for the Women's exchange in Florida that will be held at Mrs. Waller's Palm Beach home on February 17 and 18. Shi The Rosewood circle will give a valen- tine party at its next meeting at the home of Mrs. John Cecil Black of 1174 Tower. road, on Tuesday, February 3, at 2. All members and friends are urged to be present. Ra Mrs. Victor Spoehr of Rogers Park, who is the daughter of Mrs. B. F. Affleck, gave a bridge on Wednesday afternoon for Miss Eleanor Bush of Glencoe, whose marriage takes place on Saturday, January 31. rr Ooms Mrs. Frank James of Rogers Park is visiting the W. Farleys of 800 Walden road, while little Mary Jane Farley is ill. --_-- The Young People's Fellowship club will hold its weekly meeting at Christ Church Parish house on Sunday, with supper at 6. ---- Miss Jean Henning entertained the Cardinal club Tuesday, January 27, at her home at 458 Linden avenue. --(p-- Mrs John Vennema was hostess to 12 guests at luncheon Thursday at Indian Hill club. The Chicago branch of the English- speaking union announces a dinner to be given in honor of Mrs. D. Pirie Beyea, Monday evening, February 2. at the La Salle hotel, at 7 o'clock. Mrs. Bevea has just returned from a world-wide journey. She will speak of her experiences in Australia and New Zealand. The subject of her talk will be "The League of Neighbors." -- The MacDowell society of the North Shore will hold its next meeting Tues- day evening February'3, at 8 o'clock at the home of Dr. Herbert and Dr. Stephens Walker, 303 Cumnor road. Miss Isabelle Cline, soprano, and Mrs. Nina Fitch Babcock, pianist, will pres- ent the program. Guest tickets may be procured from Dr W. C. Colledge, treasurer. --O The Wilmette and Winnetka W. C. T. U. will meet at the home of Mrs. W. E. Hamm, 270 Scott avenue, Hub- bard Woods, Monday afternoon, Febru- ary 2, at 2 o'clock. Mrs. W. J. Menger of Hyde Park will speak on "Sabbath Observance." Mrs. Alinda Bryant will sing. --C-- The Alpha Omicron Pi sorority gave a buffet dinner January 19 at the home of Peggy Tawse, 730 Greenwood avenue, Wilmette, in honor of one of the Founders of Rho chapter. Mrs. Henry Urion will provide a pro- gram on "Alumnae News and Views." -- Mr. and Mrs. Michael Straus of Chi- cago are leaving shortly for a several months' journey abroad. Mrs. Straus was Miss Nancy Porter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Porter of Hubbard Woods. -- Mr. and Mrs. F. O.
