WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1925 HOLD SESSIONS ON RECREATION Community House Interested in Evanston Parley Plans for the district conference for representatives of recreation bureaus in 32 Illinois and Towa cities assumed form this week as it was announced that the meeting will open in Evans- ton on Thursday, March 5. Most of the meetings are to be held at the Orrington hotel, it has been decided. Winnetka, through its Community House, is vitally interested. Harry L. Allen, district representa- tive of the Playground and Recreation Association of America, with head- quarters in Chicago, has given out some preliminary plans for the con- ference. It is to include those towns that have recreation programs and are affiliated with the national organiza- tion. Representatives of the departments in the various cities, chairmen of boards, city officials, and representa- tives of special committees are ex- pected to gather in Evanston for the meeting of recreation experts. Prominent Speakers Coming Although the names of speakers have not yet been made public, it was announced that many of the most able men in the field have agreed to be present to deliver the formal lectures. Programs, administration and facili- ties are the three principal topics for discussion, each including a multitude of minor topics. "Programs include community mus- ic, dramatics, social and athletic pro- grams, physical education and special celebrations, "Mr. Allen explained. "Under facilities we find such topics for discussion as the securing of parks, playgrounds and forest preserve areas, community centers such as schools, and general equipment for carrying on of programs. The round table discussions in administration 'will be particularly vital to the di- rectors of programs. Education and publicity plans are included under this heading." Public May Attend It was explained that practically all of the meetings would be held in the form of round table discussions at which both paid and volunteer work- ers will be welcome. To accommodate the crowds at one or two of the meet- mgs, it was announced that arrange- ments are now under way to procure an auditorium for both nights of' the conference when some of the most prominent speakers will be heard. One of the special topics that will be discussed at the conference is the relation of the recreation programs to the general city plan. The loca- tion of parks and playgrounds with regard to busy streets, transportation, thickly or thinly settled areas is of vital importance to recreation bu- reaus, Mr. Allen asserted. . It is stated that the meetings will open on March 5, at 9 o'clock. A joint meeting of the Optimist, Ki- wanis and Rotary clubs will be held at noon with visiting delegates as guests. Will Have Many Exhibits In addition to the discussion groups and programs of speakers, various cities have announced the intention of bringing exhibits of handcraft work, publicity and other materials of their respective programs. Evanston may also arrange an exhibit inasmuch as the local department won wide praise at the national convention where the Evanston display was considered one of the best. North Shore Basketball Team in Double Victory North Shore Country Day school has added two more cage victories to its string in the past week. It defeated Harvard school in the visitors' gym 19- 9. Despite the fact that the gym was small and the game unusually rough, Grotenhuis managed to make two baskets, Dean and Fowle each one, and McEwen three. The remainder of the scores were made on free throws. Th score at the end of the first half was 11-4, and, coming back stronger than ever, the Purple boys managed to make three more ringers by a bit of pretty team work. Last Saturday North Shore was equal- ly successful in defeating Lake Forest in their gym by a score of 33-8. The game was just as difficult as the pre- ceding fray. The North Shore team had some trouble in finding itself, es- pecially its eye for the basket, but in the second half managed to rally and push the score to the finish. Incidentally, this last is the sixth consecutive victory of North Shore's basketball season. Mrs. G. Ehlers, mother of Mrs. J.
