po ror WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 1925 'HONEST ABE' FILM COMING Great Picture to Be at Com- munity House Community House announces that "Abraham Lincoln" has been secured for a two day showing during the latter part of March. Of this picture, Burton H. Atwood, Jr., director of motion pictures says : : "The motion picture, 'Abraham Lin- coln,' is undoubtedly a masterpiece--a classic of the screen. It gives the opti- ence, in a simple, unpretentious way, a profound impression of the life of one of America's greatest men. "The personality of George Billings, who plays the part of Lincoln, would, in itself, make the picture remarkable. He is not, and probably never will be, an actor, but was a postman in Los Angeles when discovered by the film pro- ducers. His uncanny resemblence to Lincoln made them invite him to accept the part. What is even more uncanny is the fact that after barely two months of coaching the man was so completely ab- sorbed by the role that he did not 'play' it but seemed to live it. Mr. 'Billing's portrayal of Lincoln makes this charac- terization one of the most outstanding of the film art. "With a few well-chosen scenes, Iin- coln's birth and babyhood are shown. Then Abe as a boy who does not like to kill animals, who worships his mother, and who, at the age of 10 years, does a man's work on the farm. His early dis- approval of slavery is shown when Lin- coln visits a slave auction in New Or- leans and says, 'If I ever get a chance to hit this thing, I will hit it and hit it hard. "Soon we see the beginning of his political career. The Lincoln of the public stumps making his short, concise speeches which carried such direct mes- sages. We find him a Congressman at Washington, then back at the law office, and, as a result of his ever-growing popularity, his nomination and election to the Presidency. "Next the Civil war, told in a few scenes which show great artistry and restraint but which present a most vivid and consecutive account of Lincoln's dis- appointments, his joys, and finally his great speech at Gettysburg. "In the final reels of the picture a detailed account is given of the fatal theatre party when Abraham became, to quote Secretary Stanton, 'A man of the ages.' "Much credit is due the director, Philip Rosen, for the care and restraint exer- cised in the production of 'Abraham Lincoln" His contribution, along with that of George Billings and the support- ing cast, make this a most accurate and remarkable historic film."
