WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 1925 no wn Q FIND MEASLES NEAR EPIDEMIC Average Report in State Is 1,000 Weekly % 77 77% & An epidemic of measles is sweeping over the state, according to Dr. Isaac D. Rawlings, state health director. Cases are being reported at the rate of 150 per day. From an average of 300 cases weekly two months ago the incidence has jumped to more than 1,000 cases weekly while the prospects are that the preval- ence of this disease will increase before it begins to recede. "Measles usually reaches its highest prevalence in May," said Dr. Rawlings. "It tends to run in two year cycles, a light year sbeing followed by a heavy year. Last year measles was light. This year a general epidemic is not unlikely. Already the weekly incidence has tripled since January 1 and it seems probable that 2000 or 3,000 cases weekly will occur during the main measles season in April and May. Universal Susceptibility "Almost universal susceptibility is re- sponsible for the high measles incidence. Scarcely anybody who has not had measles is immune to the disease and it is highly contagious the meeting of a patient on the street being sufficiently close contact to a susceptible person. Added to this is the fact that there is no effective means of vaccinating against measles, rigid quarantine being the chief control measure at hand. "Contrary to popular opinion measles may be a very serious affair. In epi- demic years it causes more than 500 fatalities in Illinois, a mortality greater than that from either scarlet fever, ty- phoid fever or smallpox. It always lowers the resistance of the patient, greatly increasing the chances for pneu- monia, tuberculosis, heart disease and kidney trouble. "Measles goes hardest with very young children. Seventy per cent of fatal cases are among children under 3 years of age. The older a child is the better he can withstand measles. Don't Expose Children! "The parent who in this day of en- lightenment exposes a child to measles in order that the child may have the disease and be done with it commits an unpardonable sin. Well | children ought to be kept as far as possible away from measles patients while the sick ought to have the benefit of good medical attention." Yale Uses Text Book Prepared at N. U.
