Winnetka Camp Fire Guardians met together in Community House Monday afternoon, March 16, at the call of Mrs. E. W. Wortley, Winnetka executive of Camp Fire, to consider the formation of a Winnetka Guard- ian's association. The project was re- ceived with enthusiasm by the guard- ians. Mettings will be held the third Monday of each month, and questions of program and mutual helpfulness will be taken up. It was felt that with such a wealth of suggestions as Camp Fire has to offer it would be a unify- ing force in the eight groups which are formed in Winnetka, to have such an organization. The Winnetka Guardians are Mrs. Barret Conway, Mrs. R. D. Pierce, Mrs. James Fentress, Mrs. Paul Hutchinson, Miss Clara Harsh, Miss Judith Walsh, Miss Margaret Stewart, Miss Mary von Hofsten. Mrs. Howard Bowers and Miss Harriet Childs are assistant guard- ians. In addition to the Winnetka execu- tive, Mrs. Wortley, the work is greatly assisted by the Camp Fire council of 21 members which meets once a month. Camp Fire stands for the things of the home and the out of doors, and works through the winning of honors in seven different "crafts," home, health, hand, camp, business, citizenship, and nature. It presents a very definite and stimulat- ing health program. Fach Camp Fire Girl is encouraged to keep a monthly "Health Chart" and to win the Health honor for this accomplishment. Camp Fire has seven "Laws" which it is the ambition of every Camp Fire Girl to live up to faithfully-- "Seek Beauty Give Service Pursue Knowledge Be Trustworthy Hold on to Health Glorify Work Be Happy." ~ Winnetka Camp Fire Girls are work- ing especially for the Nature Honors the next six weeks, and are keeping bird lists. Mrs. Pierce's group is hard at work on its knot boards, and hopes to have them ready to be shown soon. The last issue of Everygirl's Magazine (the official magazine of Camp Fire) has honored Winnetka Camp Fire Girls by carrying a picture of the beautiful Camp Fire Girls' fire place in Commun- ity House which is the work of the Winnetka Camp Fire Girls. Next month this magazine is to publish the story of how this fire place was made. Council Votes Against Rezoning Franz Plot At the last meeting of the Village council it was decided not to rezone the property of B. F. Franz, which is situ- ated on the east side of Chestnut street between Oak and Cherry streets. The owner had petitioned to have it rezoned from class B residential to class C commercial and a public hearing before the Board of Appeals, acting as a special committee of the council, was held in January. Objections to the petition were filed by 11 property owners in the vicinity, whereupon the Board of Appeals recom- mended that no change be made. This recommendation was acted upon favor- ably by the council. At this conference there will be noted speakers and leaders in boys' activities. A dinner at 6 o'clock Saturday will follow an interesting day of group meetings. Older boys along the north shore are cordially invited to at- tend. The Chamber of Commerce dinner will be given on Monday, March 23. Dirt roads, however, are bad and impassable in many places due to rains and warmer temperature. The cold snap at the end of last week froze a crust over dirt roads, making them rutted. Severe rain storms in central Illinois and Northern Indiana caused consider- able damage to dirt and gravel roads, washing out bridges and flooding sections of the country.
