It is 14 years old and residents have long since decided whether or not it de- serves support and continuance. If use is any measure of approval, the governing board believes the village wants the "House" maintained; for more than one million is the attendance record since it was built in 1911. Sunday, April 5 will find 15 zore teams, of six to 12 men each, visiting their neighbors to obtain pledges for 1925 operating expenses. The only people not visited will be those who have already subscribed. Fifteen cap- tains, representing the Board of Gov- ernors, are conducting the campaign They are: Name Zone Captains W. E. "We want to give service as well as to get funds," say the governors. Citizens Receive Letter In a letter addressed to potential contributors and mailed yesterday, the governors remind readers of the character of the institution in the fol- lowing terms: "Community House belongs to the whole village of Winnetka. It serves all individuals and groups who need it, without distinction as to church at- tendance, location or social affilia- tion. It offers to men, women and chil- dren opportunities for recreation, for gymnasium exercise, for club work and many sorts of group activity. It af- fords a meeting place for village organizations. It promotes character- building programs for young people, such as Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, Pathfinders and Blue Birds. It houses the Community Drama club, MARMON MARMON NORTH SHORE SALES and SERVICE 1008 Davis St. Greenleaf 1038 Open Every Evening until 9:30 Ee i Ra ara rin the American Legion, Royal Neigh- bors, Modern Woodmen, sewing groups, art groups, music groups, so- cial clubs and others. It is the home the Czecho-Slovakian club, the British American society, the Scandinavian Pleasure club and other national so- cieties. It is a meeting place for luncheons, dinners and programs of the Rotary club, the Winnetka Men's club, the Woman's society of the Con- gregational church, the League of Women Voters, the Parent-Teacher association, the Winnetka Public school faculty, the North Shore Art league and others. Conduct English Classes "It sponsors and carries on classes in English for foreigners, and Ameri- canization work. It organized and maintains Friendship Circle (a large group of girls working in Winnetka homes). It is the only place where motion pictures are shown regularly in the village, and it aims to give only the best which can be obtained. Its doors are open from 7:30 in the morning until midnight, six days a week, and often on Sundays. There are times when it buzzes all day long, like the proverbial bee-hive. All this is in addition to gymnasium classes for men, women and children, dancing classes, basketball, baseball and other gym- nasium activities. "It radiates a spirit of kindliness, and it stands for helpfulness, neigh- borliness and finer citizenship. Com- munity House has been called 'The friendly heart of Winnetka.' Essential to Community "To those Winnetkans who know Community House, its usefulness is more fully understood when they try to picture how Winnetka would seem without it. It wouldnt be Winnetka. "To the newcomers, an invitation is extended to come and get acquainted. If you feel a stranger in the village, a good way to take root is to learn to know Community House, and to be- come interested in its activities and what it has to offer. Cives Chance to Help "To all the village, an opportunity is given to help in its various activi- ties, as well as to enjoy them, and to ally one's self with its work. During the past year one hundred and five volunteer workers have given regular, definite service in Community House-- some weekly, some monthly. It offers you a real chance to serve the community through volun- teer service in some of its branches of work. "Can the citizens who stand for the things this institution promotes afford not to support it? Called "Community Chest" "Winnetka has no "Community Chest," but a gift to Community House is nearly the same as one to such a fund, (exclusive, of course, of Church support). The Boy Scouts alone have three groups, with over 100 boys en- olled. In Chicago, a campaign to raise $160,000 for the Scouts was re- cently conducted. Here, your con- tribution to Community House is spread over the Scouts and dozens of other worthwhile activities. So make your contributions large enough to insure that your support will count for each of these worthwhile enter- prises." Is Village Institution "Community House is a village in- stitution, organized in 1911 for whole- some recreation and the promotion of all that makes for the development of character, and upright, active citizen- ship.
