WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 2, 1925 MARY PICKFORD PICTURE COMING "Dorothy Vernon" Due Here Next Friday Something unusual in the form of entertainment will be offered at Com- munity House movies next week when "K--The Unknown" is featured at Tuesday's shows and Mary Pickford in "Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall" at the Friday and Saturday perform- ances. "K--The Unknown" is described as a baffling mystery story adapted from Mary Roberts Rinehart's novel, "K." The featured players are Virginia Valli, star of "The Signal Tower" and "A Lady of Quality," and Percy Mar- mount, who is remembered for his ex- cellent work in the picturization of "If Winter Comes." On the same bill, Our Gang will appear in another of their mirth-quakes, "Sunday Calm." Next Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, will find Mary Pickford's lat- est production at Community House. "Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall" presents "America's sweetheart" once again in the role of a grown-up wom- an. Of this picture, "The Educational Screen," the independent magazine de- voted to the new influence in national education says: "England of the hoary castles, England of the trim gardens, Eng- land of the green woods, FEngland in the gay days of FElizabeth--it lives all too briefly for us in Mary Pickford's beautiful production of Charles Major's romantic novel. Dorothy herself is an adorable spit- fire, much given to throwing things, but largely played in that vein of gay tenderness that is so truly Mary Pick- ford. Queen Elizabeth, played rarely by Clare Eames, is a remarkable por- trait, not only in appearance but in spirit. To this reviewer, in fact, it was the outstanding performance, al- though the cast includes many sea- soned and able actors. One of the many joys of Miss Pickford's pictures is the uniform excellence of her casts, which, in itself, is ample evidence that Mary Pickford, the star, is subordin- ated to Mary Pickford, the producer. And so we have Estelle Taylor as Mary, Queen of Scots, Anders Ran- dolph as Sir George Vernon, Wilfred Lucas as the Earl of Rutland, Alan Forrest as the hero, Sir John Manners, Marc McDermont as Sir Malcolm Vernon, and a host of others. Marshall Neilan directed the story, and in it he has to his credit one of the loveliest of all the costume pictures. There will be matinee performances Friday at 4, and Saturday at 2:30 o'clock. Evening showings both nights at 7:15 and 9 o'clock. Dr. and Mrs. Harry W. Moore, 731 Foxdale _avenue, have just returned from their new residence in Sarasota, Fla. DR. HEDGER TO SPEAK AT HAWTHORN SCHOOL A course of two lectures dealing with the health, mental and physical, of the school child is to be given at the Hawthorn School, Glencoe, under the auspices of the Mothers' associa- tion. The first lecture, "The Health of the School Child" will be given on Friday evening, May 8, at 8 o'clock and the speaker will be Dr. Caroline Hedger. Dr. Caroline Hedger is a member of the staff of the Elizabeth McCormick Memorial fund of Chicago. Previous to her connection with that organiza- tion Dr. Hedger was a school physi- cian under the Chicago Health De- partment, and in that capacity, and also as a member of the Board of In- fant Welfare society, she was in- fluential in putting on the Baby Sav- ing campaign in Chicago some years ago. In the early years of the World War Dr. Hedger was sent by the Chicago Woman's Club to Belgium to assist in the fight against the typhoid epidemic which was ravaging the country. This work proved to be to a large extent among the children. This opportunity to hear one of Dr. Hedger's most interesting and instruc- tive lectures without making a long trip to the city is a rare one. Tickets can be obtained at the school or through Mrs. Combs, telephone Win- netka 1510. Skokie Graduating Class Favors Ritual Ceremony Pupils of the Skokie school who are graduating this June have formally organized their graduating class, which will number about 110 members. Graduation exercises will be held June 18. The children voted in favor of the ritual used on previous occa- sions and adopted the Indian head class pin in silver, similar to former class pins. The class colors will be blue and silver. BEGIN WORK ON NEW WEISSENBERG BLOCK Construction has been started on a new apartment and office building on the northeast corner of Elm and Chest- nut streets, which is being built by E. C. FURNITURE PAINTING SIGN PAINTING RASMESEN'S PAINT STORE PHONE WINNETKA 344 ---- The new building has been under contemplation for a year. It will be |] one of the most pretentious structures in the business district, which has seen the addition of a number of new build- ings during the past year. With the addition of the Weissen- berg building, Elm street presents an almost unbroken front of attractive business places from Linden avenue to Chestnut street, on both sides of the street. Another new building which will soon be completed is the Nelson laundry, which is north of the Weis- senberg building.
