RE i WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 16,1925 17 CASTIS READY FOR 'CLARENCE Final Senior Play at New Trier Characterized as Sparkling Comedy ENDS DRAMATIC YEAR John F. Roos Has Title Role in Piece The laugh-provoking comedy, "Clar- ence," in four acts, by Booth Tarking- ton, will be presented as the senior play this year on Saturday, May 23, at New Trier auditorium. As the last of the four major plays of the season, "Clarence" decidedly clears the atmosphere of any woeful emotions after the intensive work on the other three dramas, with its live- ly humor and clever plot. The entire cast has been chosen from among members of the senior class, and the majority of them have appeared in the earlier plays of the past year, or during their other years at New Trier. Naturally, the presentation will repre- sent some of the best talent of the class if not of the school. The Cast The list of characters, in the order of their appearance, follows: Mrs. Martyn ....Genevieve Gallagher Mr. Wheeler ©.i vain. Dan Burrill Mrs. Wheeler ...... Madeline Truitt Bobby Wheeler Robert English Cora Wheeler ...... Margaret Brewer Violet Pinney ........ Margery Miller CLARENCE . f..:.... John F. Roos Dellds:.)... 55a, Alice Channer Dinwiddie '. a. Walter Braun Hubert Stem Morgan Yost The story from start to finish is a web of entanglements which becomes more intricate as the plot advances. In the last act, however, the mass of com- plications are suddenly swept away by Clarence himself, all unsuspectingly and in such a droll manner that the situation is enough to rouse a sense of hilarity in the most critical person in the audience. Mystery Surrounds Youth The mystery, it seems, is nothing more than the fact that little is known of Clarence's identity, not even his surname is positively known by any one of the family who take him into their home. Then it appears that he is quite a personage instead of the nonentity they thought they were hous- ing. From the spineless creature of the first act, Clarence develops a strange power over the Wheeler chil- dren, next over the household servants, and finally his influence is brought to bear on the mistress of the establish- ment, herself. All this, without undue volition on Clarence's part. The one person whom he would most desire to have hearken to his words is the beautiful governess, Violet Pinney. But this young woman remains adamant to his attempts to win her favor. Until the very end, she independently slights him most when the rest of the house- old favors him most. Immediately, he senses a change for better in the ad- vances extended to him by Miss Pin- ney. He loses no time in taking ad- vantage of the happier atmosphere and succeeds in winning her. Wins Adamant Girl Even then, there is confusion as to his real name. It devolves upon Clar- ence to himself disclose his identity in a very simple fashion but withal having its astounding features. The play is one which a high school cast may well handle with fine coach- ing. This they have in Miss Elizabeth Stanweod and Mr. Van Kirk. The cast is advancing by leaps and bounds, in preparation for their presentation, and will be ready by May 23 to give to the public something more than the usual school performance.
