WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 23, 1925 WE'RE IN BIG CLEAN-UP ERA Realty Boards Take Lead in Beautification 4 The nation-wide campaign initiated by the National Association of Real Estate boards for the cleaning up of properties along railroad right of ways is being combined in a number of cities with a general campaign for improv- ing the appearance of the entire com- munity. Spring clean-ups and spring plant- ings of lawns and shrubbery not only lead to summer blossoming for the edification of the individual families undertaking the improvement; they also lead to greater sale value of in- dividual holdings, greater community attractiveness, and higher real estate values for the city as a whole, the real estate boards point out. Approximately 80 cities are under- taking, under the leadership of their real estate boards, the improvement of their appearance as presented to travelers passing through them by rail. The work is being carried on with the co-operation of railroad compan- ies, industrial companies having track fro_ age, civic organizations in the various cities, and the newspapers and the business men of the communities. In Long Beach, Cal, for example, the city council has indorsed the move- ment, and offered the use of the city wagons and other equipment in carry- ing on the work. Checking Auto Deaths : Found Difficult Task Statistics on automobile accidents throughout the country are of a very meager sort, according to Charles M. Hayes, president of the Chicago Motor club. One of the defects in these statistics is that the accident is charged to the city in which the death occurs, and not to the place of the fatal accident. This condition, according to the Bureau of Census at Washington, is due to the fact that in many cities the certificate of death does not specify the place of accident. To remedy this defect, the bureau is endeavoring to ascertain in each instance the locality in which every fatal automobile acci- dent occur a With this end in yiew ate reg istrars and local registrars 'through: out the country are being requested to secure this information and give a definite statement on each certifi- cate. The bureau has asked the vari- ous motor clubs to have local reg- istrars give attention to this request, and has solicited the aid of the clubs in compiling authentic statistics. He is known as William Corrus about Wilmette. A man companion, Peter Heinsen, also a cab driver, and two women also were given smaller fines on the same charge. The women were Miss Mary Peterson of Evanston, and Miss O. Sholtz, 1528 Jonquil terrace, Chicago. About, 3 o'clock Wednesday morn- ing residents in the block at the west end of Ashland avenue called the police, stating that screams of women were heard coming from a car parked near their homes: The police appeared on' the scene and took the party to headquarters. Yesterday afternoon the two girls came before Magistrate Daniel C. Mickey of Wilmette who fined each of them $2 and costs. The men asked for a change of venue to Magistrate C. T. Northrop of Winnetka and were tried an hour later. Patrolman McKay of Wilmette stated that Corrus was an old offender and had made a practice of accosting women at the "I" terminal. + According to the witnesses, the women climbed into the cab, unsolicit- ed, and Miss Peterson, who stated that she had often been taken home in Corrus' cab, introduced her com- panion to Heinsen. Heinsen was in- vited by Corrus to leave his cab and join the party, and did so. Then all went "for a little ride." Magistrate Northrop, in passing sentence, stated that the practice of picking up girls had become a serious problem and reminded them that one such incident recently landed a man in the Bridewell for six months. He said he hoped the incident would teach teach them all a lesson. Heinsen, who has no previous police record, was admonished to keep out of bad company and let off with a $10 fine. Patrolman McKay testified that he had a good reputation as a driver and it was his first offense. Corrus stated that he would appeal the case.
