On Tuesday comes D. W. Griffith's great film, "America," while vivacious Col- leen Moore appears on Friday in "Sally." "America" is taken from Robert W. Chambers' famous play which is an attempt to suggest, in a small way, the great sacrifices made by our fore- fathers that America might become a free and independent nation. It is not an attempt to portray the story of the Revolution, as that story is too tremendous to be fully told by one play. However, no efforts have been spared to have the historical incidents as correct as possible. It sets a new standard in the picture play as high and commanding as "The Birth of a Nation" set in its day. Ziegfeld's biggest hit, "Sally" gives us Colleen Moore at her best. An orphan, it falls to Sally's lot to live with an old danseuse. She tries for a theatrical career in order to help her benefactress but is rebuffed. Dis- couraged, Sally finally ends up in a little cafe where an opportunity pre- sents itself to appear as an entertainer. A theatrical agent sees her and per- suades her to pose as a Russian danc- er at a fete to be given by the aunt and foster father of a wealthy boy with whom Sally has fallen in love. Sally is a triumph! However, the proprietor of the small cafe follows her and ex- poses the deception. Humiliated and spurning the young man's attentions, the girl goes back to the old danseuse. Again, the agent brings her an oppor- tunity to appear in public and again, she wins success. 500 Motorists Obtain Bargain Day Free Oil Five hundred automobile owners ob- tained free oil at the Hubbard Woods filling station Wednesday, the first day of the Hubbard Woods street opening celebration, according to Kenneth Mc- Lain, one of the proprietors. Four men were kept busy from early morning until late at night draining crank cases and refilling them with new oil. All Hubbard Woods merchants offered special bargain prices or inducements on that day, which had been designated bargain day. MOSQUITO ABATEMENT WORK GETS UNDER WAY Mosquito abatement work is being carried on steadily in Winnetka and funds are slowly coming into the treas- ury of the Winnetka Mosquito Abate- ment committee, which is directing the fight against the pests. A circular is- sued last week telling of the war which is to be waged against the mos- quito, and appealing for a contribution from each resident for that purppose stated that the amount which it is hoped to raise this year is $4,000. The response of the residents of the village indicates that little trouble will be ex- perienced in raising this amount, it is said. Winnetka has carried on mosquito abatement work in former years but this is the first year that it has been necessary to spend such a large amount of money on the work. Village em- ployes are already at work draining pools of stagnant water, where possible, and oiling all standing water which it is impossible to drain away. Included in this work every catch basin in the village will be oiled. The necessity for repeating much of the work every seven days is what makes it necessary to raise the amount of money which has been asked, it is explained. = All standing water must be sprayed every seven days, and in many cases it is necessary to drain pools which form in low places at least that often. The work is being supervised by H. L. Woolhiser, village manager, with the assistance of an expert san- itary engineer from the State Depart- ment of Health. High Winds Play Havoc with Masonic Golfers In a wind which played wild pranks and filled every ball with freak curves, members of Winnetka Masonic lodge played their first golf tournament of the season at the Devonshire Country club, Tuesday of this week.
