« " WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 1925 MUSIC CLUB T0 HEAR SPALDING Famous American Violinist Engaged for Artist-Series Appearance RANKS WITH MASTERS Native Chicagoan Trained in Europe Albert Spalding, famous American violinist, has been engaged by the Win- netka Music club as one of the artists in next seasons' series of concerts to be given under auspices of that organiza- tion. Albert Spalding Though he has lived in Florence many years Chicago still claims Mr. Spalding as her own and among those few who return again and again as soloists with the Chicago Symphony orchestra, he is welcomed the most warmly and remains the prime favorite. Mr. Spalding has never been a spectacular player nor a sudden meteor in the American musical firmament, but his performances have gradually ma- tured and ripened from season to sea- son, until now it would be quite safe to number him among the leading half dozen violinists in the world. Native of Chicago He was born in Chicago. His mother was a pianist of no mean ability. She determined that her son should have a musical career and began his educa- tion in that art at a very early age. His first lessons were in New York but while still a small child he was taken to Florence to continue his studies and there he grew up hearing the best music and meeting the great musicians of Europe. When he was but 10 years old he played before the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and at 14 was awarded a professorship in the Bologna Conservatory. He made his profes- sional debut in Paris in 1908, and four vers later appeared for the first time in New York. Since then Spalding has given concerts in practically every country of the civilized world. He en- joys the honor of being the only Amer- ican violinist who has ever appeared at "La Scala", Milan. Abroad he has appeared twice as soloist with the Symphony orchestras of Kuropean capitals, and in four of them, London, Paris, Helsingfors and Amsterdam, he has been re-engaged three times. The New York Sym- phony has chosen him as soloist 36 times and Frederick Stock has pre- sented him in Chicago with the Sym- phony orchestra no less than 19 times. This does not take any note of his many concert appearances at home and abroad. Tremendous Repertoire His repertoire is tremendous includ- ing as it does concertoes of the masters from Bach down to those of our own day. In spite of his wide travels as a concert player he has found time to do a large amount of composing. One of his suites for violin had the honor of being given at the Berkshire music festival which is sponsored by Mrs. Coolidge, a former Chicagoan. Albert Spalding holds a place second to none for dignity of interpretation and thoroughness of musicianship and he plays with a classic finish and a spirit of enthusiasm for his work that sweeps his audience into ardent ad- miration. Miss Ainslee Bennett, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Ben- nett of Sheridan road, returned home on Sunday from the East where she has been attending school at Ogentz.
