WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 1925 HUBBARD WOODS FETE SUCCESS Merchants Rejoice at Enthu- siasm Displayed in Street Paving Festivity L AUD IMPROVEMENTS Sherman Aldrich Asks Sup- port of Truck Highway Hubbard Woods business men de- clare the street opening celebration, held Wednesday and Thursday, June 10 and 11, to have been a great success, and are eloquent in their appreciation of the cooperation of citizens to make it so. The following statement was is- sued by the Hubbard Woods Street Opening association this week : "The Hubbard Woods street open- ing celebration was a great success ow- ing to the untiring efforts of all of those concerned with it. We wish to thank the Village officials and the speakers of the evening whose cooperation helped materially to make this a real celebration. We also extend our thanks to Bud Jewell"s orchestra, the Win- netka Chamber of Commerce band and the school children and teachers who took part in the entertainment" Sherman Aldrich, former member of the Village council, delivered one of the most interesting addresses of the evening, He caid: Review Development "Those of us who remember Hubbard Woods as the little community of 10 or 12 years ago may regret the widening, paving and lighting of these business streets, feeling that we are losing the attractiveness of our little country town. "However, we must realize that during the last few years. our popu- lation has increased three-fold. Win- netka is no longer a small village, but is_a municipality of considerable size, with the resultant need of such changes in our business sections "So that the completion of this new thoroughfare should be a great satis- faction to all residents of Hubbard Woods--to those who are selling, buy- ing. meeting trains or interested in the Village Plan, beautiful. "The council tried for over two years to provide this improvement, has tried to convince the abutting property own- ers that it meant better facilities for handling their business. There were some objections, encugh to compel "1s to withdraw all proceedings a year ago, after the niatter had been taken to court for confirmation of the asseis- ment spread. The objections were not against the improvement but related to the cost of the improvement. I be- lieve that you property owners on this street can now realize the advantages of your new 40-foot pavement with its parking space for shoppers, its attract- tve appearance and with the new orna- mental lighting system, all of which serves to make the Hubbard Woods business district one of the most de- sirable and attractive on the north shore. The Hubbard Woods shopper can no longer say that she goes to the ma:n Winnetka business district He- cause of the impassable condition of business streets in Hubbard Woods. "Some of you are aware of the plans of the Village for a through traffic highway, of which this new pavement is a part. For two years definite plans have been in the making, and Winnetka | has persuaded Glencoe, Kenilworth and Wilmette to join with her in the construction of a direct highway run- ning from Green Bay road at the north end of Glencoe, south on Vernon avenue to South avenue, Glencoe, then south on Linden avenue, Wilmette parallel with and just west of the rail- road. "This road which will be 40 feet in width with an 11 inch reinforced con- crete pavement, will mean more to our village than any improvement we have ever had. Truck traffic will be com- pelled to use this highway, thereby taking away their destructive effect on our light residential streets and their danger to our children. "Cn Sundays and holidays, this road will be used by motorists to and from Chicago, as it is a known fact that pleasure riders will take the best and niost direct route, thereby relieving our residential sections of a consider- able Sunday traffic. Asks Citizens Support "The council had requested and been promised State Aid on this project, but the county and state highway en- gineers, after inspecting our plans, had demanded such changes that the cost of meeting their requirements would be larger than the county and State Aid. Therefore, unless they can be induced to agree to a modification of their ideas, we will be forced to go ahead without state assistance. "We need this highway because it will save the village thousands of dol- lars in the maintenance of our resi- dential streets, now broken up by heavy truck traffic, and because it will increase the value and beauty of our village as a residential suburb by keep- ing the bulk of truck traffic on one highway, rendering our streets safer for children. I, therefore, appeal to you to support this through highway project for the good of us all."
