WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 1925 19 HOLDS FRANCE WILL PAY DEBT Educator Declares Plans Must be Worked Out Dr. Bernard Fay, professor of his- tory and literature at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, near Paris, France, reached Evanston this week and will teach in the Summer school of North- western university. Prof. Fav has made a special study of the relations of France and the United States and recently has had published in leading French reviews two of his articles. He says that inasmuch as there exists a French debt, France should pay Ameri- ca, but just how the debt is to be met, he points out, is the difficult question. "We may as well admit that both the French and American people know that the debt exists," said Dr. Fay, "and that the greatest difficulty surrounds the ways and means of paving it. I feel that there probably will be several plans suggested during the next few years and that they may not be feasible. So much depends upon fu- ture trade balances between the two nations and related economical ques- tions. Possibly within a decade the workable plan will be agreed upon and will be in operation. My guess is that it will be a long-term program cover- ing many years. Dr. Fay said that industrial condi- tions in France are very satisfactory now and that virtually no able-bodied workers are idle. The tourist rush from the United States is heavy, he declared, and the devastated section in France is being devoted now to pro- ductive uses. Recently Dr. Fay pub- lished a book upon "The Revolution- ary Spirit in France and America Dur- ing the Eighteenth Century." While at Northwestern university he will make a special study of Benjamin Franklin in the famous William S. Mason library in Evanston and will later publish a book upon "Franklin, A Citizen of The World." Formal opening of the summer ses- sion of Northwestern university took place Tuesday at chapel, when Presi- den Scott addressed the new students. ; Mrs. Franklin Rudolph and her fam- ily of 745 Sheridan road, are abroad RAVINIA OPERA OPEN SATURDAY All Roads Lead to Summer Music Mecca The twinkling lights of Ravinia park will announce the opening this Sat- urday night of the much heralded sum- mer opera season; the gates long closed, will be thrown hospitably open, and the roads, widened and repaved, leading to the park, are now in readi- ness for the accommodation of the long lines of automobiles which will sweep into the Ravinia grounds on this most momentous occasion. The fame of Ravinia is rapidly spreading. From the east, west and south come inquiries of the Ravinia summer opera company. Milwaukee has asked for a special train. Others demand summer accommodations "near the Ravinia Opera company." Thus, little by little, comes the recognition and enduring success which Ravinia must inevitably know as the Mecca of summer opera. As has been announced "L'Amore dei Tre Re" is the opera Louis Eckstein has chosen with which to inaugurate the season, the opera being one of the most popular in the company's rep- ertoire. The galaxy of stars in the cast includes Lucrezia Bori as Fiora, Giovanni Martinelli as Avito, Guiseppe Danise as Manfredo, Virgilio Lazzari as Archibaldo. Gennaro Papi will conduct the per- formance. For the second gala night "Martha" will be given with Tito Schipa, Ina Jourskaya, Florence Macbeth, Vir- gilia Lazzari, Paolo Ananian in the cast and Louis Hasselmans conducting. For those not familiar with the road to the eastern entrance to the park, it is announced that automobiles ap- proaching from the north should fol- low Sheridan road to Dean avenue, proceed west on Dean to the road skirting the railroad tracks and drive south on this road to the Ravinia park entrance. The Green Bay road en- trance is also open as usual to the western gate of the park. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Elting, 830 Mt.
