WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 1925 7 GIRL CAMPERS BACK AT HOME Coats of Tan and Thrilling Tales Come Along Thirty-three sun-tanned maidens, all confirmed apostles of the great out- of-doors, returned home this morning from a three-weeks camping trip at Indian Hill camp, Lake Hamlin, Mich., with their six councilors. But they got something at camp besides coats of tan, according to the councilors. "They bring with them, not only a good coat of tan and hearty appetites," comments one of the leaders. "But also something which is deeper than that-- an enthusiasm and love for camp and the memories of experiences there to- gether which will remain with them long after the coats of tan have van- ished. "The regular schedule of work and play which was planned for the camp has brought its own reward of hard- ened muscles and increased healthiness together with happy memories of funful days. But more than all this, the camp- ers have caught something of the great vision running through all the camp activities which is the characteristic touch of their leader, "Chief" Davies, so that each girl has taken on that in- tangible something which lifts the in- dividual above herself and offers a tonic to the imagination and to am- bitious effort. "There have been hikes to Lake Michigan, canoe paddles to the sand dunes, a trip by small canoes and row boats up the Sable river with lunch on the way. An over-night hike on which all the girls slept out in the open at night was one of the big features of the camping trip. Sleeping out under the stars brought thrills rarely experi- enced in the usually protected lives of these girls. "Constructive activity was not left out of the program. Part of each sea- son is given toward putting forth some effort to lecave the camp better than it was before they came. This year the girls built a bridge over the little canal which runs through the camp and put the finishing touches to the tennis court. The camp dance, which is held each year, was one of the high points of the three weeks. "And now they are back, "but they'll never be the same again", they an- nounce. No longer are they novices at living in nature's fastnesses. The "greenhorn" stage is a thing of yore. Moreover, that big thrill which makes such a difference--the spell of nature and her teachings, has become theirs." Mr. and Mrs. A. L.
