. WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 1925 POLICEMAN NABS 2 AUTO THIEVES Edward Cummings Lands Chicago Criminals Two auto thieves were captured and a stolen car recovered by Patrolman Edward Cummings of the Winnetka police last Sunday evening, after their car had collided with another and crashed into a tree on Sheridan road near Oak street. A third man in the stolen car, who flourished a revolver, according to witnesses, escaped before the policeman arrived at the scene. The auto thieves were intoxicated and after colliding with a car driven by M. H. Stockley, 1330 Cherry street, the driver of the car lost control and crashed into a tree. When a crowd began to gather one of the bandits drew a revolver, breaking through the crowd and escaping. Cummings ar- rived and took the other two into cus- tody. They were questioned for hours by Sergt. John Iverson and finally ad- mitted that they were William Mec- Carthy, 1636 West Monroe street, Chi- cago, and Tom Burns, 517 Madison street, Chicago, and that they had stolen the car in which they were rid- ing that afternoon, in the city. Sergt. Iverson communicated with the Chicago police and Sergt. Frank McDonald of the auto detail was sent out to get the men. They were charged with larceny of an automobile and were said by Sergt. McDonald to have records. Police are searching for their companion who escaped. Need Furnishings for Teachers' Apartments Only one apartment of the three which are being put in readiness for the new teachers coming this fall by the Winnetka Parent-Teacher associa- tion, remains unfurnished. The hous- Ing committee of this organization, which is in charge of the work of fur- nishing the apartments, appeals to res- idents of the village to come forward with any articles of furniture, or house- hold furnishings which they can spare so that a comfortable home may be ready for the teachers when they ar- rive this fall. Donations will be col- lected if the donor will communicate with Winnetka 2114. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Coambs and fam- ily of 142 Church road will leave Mon- day to spend the month of August on Cape Cod. They plan to tour in the Berkshire and White mountains. Dr. J. W. F. Davies Now on Vacation at Hamlin Dr. J. W. F. Davies, minister of religious education at the Winnetka Congregational church and director of Community house, is now taking his vacation at Lake Hamlin, near Luding- ton, Mich.,, where he has a summer home. He took an active part in the recent encampments of Winnetka boys and girls at the lake and much of the success of that camp is credited to his efforts. Mr. Davies and his family are expecting td remain at Lake Hamlin until the middle of Sep- tember. Council Denies Permit for Office Addition A request from the Winnetka Coal and Lumber company for permission to construct a frame addition to its present office building at Center and Spruce streets, which was received by the Village council at its meeting last Tuesday evening, was denied. It was pointed out that this office build- ing is within the fire limits and should not be of frame construction, and the suggestion was made that the company proceed with plans to construct perma- nent buildings of a more attractive ap- pearance, perhaps similar to the new village service yard. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Weeks and daughters, Janet and Charlotte, 53 Orchard lane, left last Saturday on a motor trip through Michigan and Canada.
