I WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, 1925 Stansell Finds Socialists' Power Doomed in Denmark Minister Finds Danish Peo- ple Universally Courteous and Bicycle Addicts Eprror's Note: Readers of WINNETKA TALK read and hear about conditions and customs in many lands, but few, it is probable, have had their attention di- rected to the little Kingdom of Denmark, the oldest kingdom in Europe, which is now under Socialist rule. Dr. Gilbert Stansell, pastor of the Wilmette Parish Methodist church, who has been in Copen- hagen attending the World Convention on "Life and Work of the Churches" has written the accompanying extremely in- teresting and instructive comment about some of the his experiences in the "Paris of the North." Among other adventures, Dr. Stansell attended the opening of the Danish Parliament. "I was present at the convening of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Denmark recently. Denmark is the old- est kingdom of Europe and, strange to relate, today has a Socialist govern- ment. "In the most beautiful government building I have seen, the members of the four political parties of Denmark assembled this week in special session to authorize the Minister of Finance to renew the loan of $30,000,000 made two or three years ago through the Guaran- tee Trust company of New York. Cheer "Last of Kings" "The Prime Minister, the biggest Socialist of them all, a type-setter un- til his union recently put him in big politics, stands full six feet tall. In his long black Prince Albert, white vest, black beard and heavy voice, he had all the appearance of the camp meeting preacher of 25 years ago in the United States. At precisely 12 o'clock he arose from the audience and read a formal call for the session. As he finished a Socialist proposed,--Tong live the People'. There was response from the Socialist wing. Then the ven- erable statesman, Klaus Barnston, the Arthur Balfour of Denmark, proposed --Long live the King'. The response was most hearty, and, but for a few of the most extreme Socialists, unanimous. The king is greatly loved, but, I was told, knows his place. He lives simply, as kings go, but there are many who say Denmark will not have a king after the death of the present monarch. "By fussing with the Radicals the Socialists have a bare majority of three, therefore, when Barnston, the senior member of the body, took the chair at 2 o'clock to organize the session, he was forced to announce that the gov- ernment is in the hands of the Social- 1sts, whereupon that group named the President of the body. "An American banker, one of Fu- rope's necessities today, who speaks good Danish and knows many of the members of Parliament, presented me to a number of the leaders. Being told that I am an American citizen, they invariably gripped my hand and smiled, and when told that IT am a Christian they seized my hand and bowed in great respect for religion. It is there- fore very galling to the great old statesmen that the present Socialist party will not permit a minister to be present and open the sessions with prayer. I was told right and left that QUALITY AUTOMOBILE PAINTING and a guaranteed job WINNETKA AUTO PAINTING CO. E. LYLE, Prop. 562 Lincoln Avenue Rear Wersted Motor Co. "The Prime Minister and the Minis- ter of Finance did not seem to see the irony of their position, denouncing Cap- ital and Capitalism and urging their fellows to hold steady and all would be in their hands, when they had come there for the express purpose of offici- ally asking Wall Street to renew their loan. Of course, they cannot make good in big finance very long, indeed, I was told many times daily that they had boosted taxes on everyone beyond reason and were unable to make good their many promises. Salaries and wages are taxed 10 per cent, straight, and then one pays 10 per cent state tax on every meal one eats in restau- rants and hotels. The laborer pays out of his 52 Kronen a week one and one- half Kronen to his union. How he 'makes it come around', as they say, 1 do not know. "Denmark has a population about equal to that of greater Chicago and her Capital City, Copenhagen, has a population of almost one million. It is called the 'Paris of the North. It is a beautiful, clean, four-story town built around arms of the Adriatic sea. Its city hall is the finest, cleanest and most perfectly appointed building for the purpose I have seen. "Copenhagen is a great tourist center and, while you meet travelers from the four corners of the earth, one sees only white people. It would delight you, dear people of Wilmette, I am sure, if you could observe how quiet, orderly and extremely polite the people are. In their amusement parks, bathing beaches and everywhere, this is true. Can you comprehend me when I tell you that there is a discipline, quietness and beautiful obedience among the children of Denmark that I did not know exist- ed in the world? I am making no com- parisons. I have been taking testimony and I am now testifying. Almost every public school teacher in the kingdom is a man, a man of some maturity, too. Bicycle Universal Conveyance "You would laugh to see the streets, all the streets full of bicycles. Every- one rides them; lovers use them; preachers in frock coats ride them: workmen smoking pipes ride; skinny men and fat ride by while you sip your coffee before the great hotels. Pro- fessors in van dyke beards all seem to love the bicycle. I was the only man in town, as it seemed to me, who did not either ride a bicycle or carry a walking stick. "A little country with a big popula- tion, Denmark is cultivated extensively from Hamlet's Castle on the north to Germany on the south. The people are certainly thrifty and from the food they WHEW! No such prosperity, however, as the Socialists were constantly telling me. They said 'You will not find a destitute person in Denmark." Up in the big hotels and in that glorious Parliament building (they borrowéd much of the money from the United States with which to build it) this talk 'listened good', but, fortun- ately for the truth and unfortunately for this boast, I had full access to the history and program of the Central Mission (Methodist), perhaps the greatest effort of its kind in the world. If you can imagine the magnificent buildings of the Moody Institute of Chicago set down here in a city of al- most a million, and compressed into an area not much larger than Evanston, you can see the Central Mission. It is doing the finest relief work that has ever come to my attention. I inspect- ed its old people's home, its invalids' home, its day nurseries, its baby folds, its orphanage, its haven for unwed mothers, its relief kitchens, its bunks for the down-and-outers, its extensive basement rooms for wood choppers in winter, its printing presses, its dea- coness work, and its large church. These I saw. The altruistic wing of the Socialist party, lies, that is all. "Just now Denmark is very dry. By that I mean, it needs rain. "Shall I ever forget dear little, clean, progressive Denmark, with its capital big enough for a country of 50 million, a capital proud of its church spires and old-fashioned enough to think that laws exist to be enforced. "Now I am off to Germany." A 90-MILE WIND Terrific wind that sometimes reaches 1 velocity of 90 miles an hour, accord- ing to government gauges, was one of the greatest obstacles combatted in filming "The White Desert." Reginald Barker directed the produc- tion for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on the wind-worn peaks of the Continental Divide in Colorado. Claire Windsor and Pat O'Malley head the cast which includes Robert Frazer, Frank Currier, Mathew Betz, Trixie Friganza, Snitz Edwards, Wil- liam Eugene, Sidney Bracey, Priscilla Bonner, Roy Laidlaw, David Dunbar, Sojin, Milton Ross and Bert Sprotte. Eight Months Old Baby Fitted With Eye Glasses Aileen Guest, 824 months old daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Guest of Ridge avenue, Wilmette, is said to be the world's youngest wearer of eye- glasses. The child was examined and fitted with glasses by Hattstrom and Sanders, Evanston opticians, following an examination by Dr. Nathan Bulk- ley, well known oculist of Evanston. Little Aileen's eyes were crossed at birth, the opticians explained. Previ- ous to wearing glasses her eyes were so crossed as to be practically in the inner corners of the sockets. The glasses are of unusual design, the frame having been specially con- structed to hold the half-dollar size lenses. Instead of having the usual temples around the ears a short piece was made with a loop at the end to which an elastic band was attached and fitted around the head. Many children of 12 or 14 months of age have been fitted with glasses but Aileen is easily the youngest of the army of eyeglass wearers. Mr. and Mrs. C. H.
