"The vocation of the real estate operator is rapidly assuming a dis- tinctly professional character, as is evidenced by the fact that many states have recently passed laws requiring examination or conformity to certain standards upon the part of those who wish to engage in this field of activity. The National Association of Real Estate boards is urging such a meas- ure for all states, and the same body is recommending a through program of university education in land econ- omics and real estate." The curriculum in land economics | and real estate at Northwestern uni- versity is designed to give the student an understanding of, first, general prin- ciples equally applicable to all busi- | ness; second, the fundamental econ- omic laws regarding land and its vari- ous uses, and the valuations arising from these uses; third, the relationship of proper real estate development and promotion to community welfare; fourth, approved practice and techni- | que in the field of real estate opera- | tions. These courses are not simply "lec- ture courses," but require a consider- able amount of reading and home study. All of the instructors are members of the regular faculty, or of the state of the Institute for Research in Land Economics and Pub- lic Utilities, which has recently be- come affiliated with Northwestern uni- versity.
