October 24, 1925 WINNETKA TALK 17 WIN OFFICERS' RANK IN ILLINOIS R. 0. T. C. North Shore Boys Recognition in Largest Reserve Unit in Country Bradlee Pruden, F. W.- Teegarden, and D. E. Peterson, of Wilmette, and P. W. Lieber of Winnetka have re- ceived appointments as officers in the Reserve Officers Training Corps at the University of Illinois. Pruden and Teegarden have been made lieutenants, while Peterson is a warrant officer. Pruden is a senior, Teegarden, a junior, and Peterson, a sophomore. These appointments, together with all the others just announced were made because of proficiency in military work, scholarship standing, and general trustworthiness. The University of Illinois brigade is the largest university unit in the world. Some three thousand men students are taking military work this year, instruc- tion being given in five branches of the service. Training Is Required Military training is required of all first and second year students. This is because the university is one of the "Land Grant Colleges," owing its origin and existence to provision of the Fed- eral Government which gave to such institutions certain portions of land in exchange for an agreement on the part of such colleges that they would in- struct students in military matters. This land grant was made by Congress in 1862. The Illinois State legislature accepted the Illinois portion in 1863, and the University of Illinois (then known as the Illinois Industrial univer- sity) was chartered in 1867. Besides its student brigade of 3,000 men, the university is custodian for ap- proximately $2,000,000 worth of mili- tary equipment loaned it by the War department for training purposes. In- struction in all branches is given by men on the regular staff of the United States army who have been detailed to the university for this purpose. Motorists who plan using the north- ern routes through the west are ad- vised by the touring bureau of the Chicago Motor club to inquire about conditions locally before starting their trips. Last week all dirt roads in Iowa were practically impassable, and this condition still exists in some places. Where they are dry enough for travel they are rough and rutted. Tractors were used in places on Iowa route 7 last week, pulling venturesome travel- ers through the mud. Motorists bound for Omaha are ad- vised to travel via Rockford, Beloit, Dubuque and Waterloo. This is an all-weather route as far as Denison, and makes the best route to Omaha in bad weather. It is longer by about 65 miles than the routes via Clinton and Marshalltown, or via Davenport and Des Moines, but the superior road condition more than makes up for the additional distance. Dr. and Mrs. Donald M. Gallie of Wilmette and Dr. and Mrs. Donald M. Jr., of Glencoe are leaving this evening for the homecoming at the University of Illinois and to attend the Illinois- Michigan game. They will be the week-end guests of Dr. and Mrs. Ebert of Urbana. \ -- LIMITED [CHICALD NORTH SHORE LINE EVERY HALF HOUR there's a train to Chicago on the North Shore Line never adapt your plans to a railroad train schedule.
