November 7, 1925 WINNETKA TALK TELLS STORY OF RUGS |: ilk led to another, and soon Mr. Dil- Expert to Give Lecture on History of Oriental Rug Making at Nahigian Brothers in Chicago A series of twelve lectures on ori- ental rugs by Arthur U. Dilley, M. A, has been arranged by Nahigian Broth- ers, 28 South Wabash avenue, Chicago. Mr. Dilley is a well-known lecturer, and will devote twelve afternoons to entertaining talks, illustrated with hand-painted lantern slides of extra- ordinary beauty, interpreting the art and romance of oriental rugs. He will speak of the rugs of the sultans and shahs, the caliphs and rajahs, the rugs of palaces, mosques, tombs, temples and tents, and of the interesting civili- zation which produced them. Twenty years ago Mr. Dilley was master of English at the Taft school --having received his appointment im- mediately upon graduating at Harvard university with the degree of master of arts. During his years of teaching, he developed an intense love for orien- tal rugs, and all the lore and romance interwoven with their history. He began to collect rare pieces, to make hand-painted slides of rugs and ruins and scenes in the rug countries, and to delve into a mysterious past for in- timate stories of the rug-weaving peo- ples. Finds Romance in Rugs One day Mr. Dilley was asked to speak before a woman's club. He chose as his subject "The Romance and Miracle of the Oriental Rug." The talk was most fascinating. The mem- bers of the club had never dreamed that such art and poetry and folklore and philosophy could be woven into the very warp and woof of the thing one calls commerce. Later on Mr. Dilley was asked to speak again on the same subject. One lev was a very busy man telling clubs and societies the story of the magic carpet. During the intervening years, Mr. Dilley's engagements have become nation-wide in scope. He has spoken before the Metropolitan museum of New York several times, the Architec- tural League of New York, the Art- in-Trades Club of New York, the mu- seums of art of Cleveland and San Francisco, the institutes of art in De- troit, Chicago and Minneapolis, the Philadelphia Commercial museum, the Boston Art Club and Society of Ar- chitects, the Brooklyn chapter of the Institute of Architects, the teachers' college of Columbia university, and so- cicties of craftsmen, college clubs, women's clubs and private gatherings in every section of the country.
