30 WINNETKA TALK November 14, 1925 BS BL a Thistlethwaite Is Best "Mudder" in Football Realm Northwestern's victory over Mich- igan on the water-soaked gridiron of Soldiers' Field last Saturday gave Coach Thistlethwaite further prestige in his record of never having lost a football game on a wet and muddy field. The Purple mentor has demon- strated in numerous contests that a battle with the elements is much to his liking. Back in his playing days at Earl- ham, when he was captain of the 11 in 1907, his team won a 28 to 0 vic- tory over Butler in a game played on a muddy field on the American Asso- ciation baseball field at Indianapolis. Later as coach at Earlham in 1911 his team defeated DePauw at Green- castle 12 to 0. The week preceding the game the ground was frozen hard and on Saturday was thawed out by a steady downpour which -turned the playing field into a bog in which it was almost impossible to walk. Eight years later while coach at Oak Park high school Chicago, the Oak Park team went to Detroit to play Steele high school for the national prep championship. Here again rain fell steadily for several days bheiore the game and again he was forced to send his men out upon a quagmire of mud. Herb Steger, at the pres: nt time assistant backfield coach with the Purple, was captain of the Oak Park team. The Chicago 11 won the game 19 to 6. So, when Saturday's game arrived, the condition of the playing field was not a new condition for the Purple mentor.
