™\ 24 WINNETKA TALK November 21, | & 77] OPERA PREPARES BIG HOLIDAY-WEEK BILLS Thanksgiving and Anniversary Programs Head Attractive List Next Week Two gala anniversary affairs and a holiday atmosphere of brilliancy will characterize the fourth week of the Chicago Civic opera, opening Sunday, November 22, with a sparkling per- formance of "Carmen" as the bill for the commuter's matinee that has be- come an established feature at the auditorium. Each Sunday at 2 o'clock a "suburban special" is given--a per- formance especially designed and timed for music lovers living remote from the heart of Chicago. The popularity these Sunday matinees have developed imparts to them the aspect of a great suburban reunion, where music lovers from far down state in Illinois, from nearby points in Indiana, Michigan and Southern Wisconsin, gather in mutual enjoyment of the un- usual opportunity afforded. The current week closes with a star performance of "Il Trovatore" at popu- lar prices on Saturday evening, No- vember 21 with every seat in the au- ditorium at less than theater prices-- a feature of the educational campaign conducted by the company. It will be the last appearance of the season of Louise Homer. Muzio, Kerr, Cortis, Mojica and Bonelli will constitute the cast. Henry G. Weber will conduct. Fitziu, Guest Artist Monday evening, November 23, ushers in a repetition of "Cavalleri Rusticana" and "I Pagliacci" The cast for the former opera includes Sawyer, Lamont and Torti. Henry G. Weber, conducting. Comprising the cast for "Pagliacci" will be Fitziu (guest), Ansseau, Steel, Defrere and Olivier; conductor, Moranzoni. Tuesday brings the season's first hearing of "Andrea Chenier" with Muzio, Pavloska, Lenska, d'Her- manoy, Marshall, Formichi, Lazzari, Defrere, Trevisan and Mojica; Polacco conducting. Wednesday evening "Faust" will be repeated in all its melodious beauty, with Mason, Hackett, Lazzari, Defrere; conductor Grovlez. Thursday evening introduces "Othello" for the first time this season, as a sturdy and sumptious Thanksgiving bill with Sawyer, Claessens, Marshall, Bonelli, Kipnis; Moranzoni conducting. Friday, an opera that will be as wel- come now as it was when first sung in an opera house that has long since disappeared, in lower New York, a century ago, 'The Barber of Seville" will be presented, commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of the in- troduction of grand opera in America. There will be an exceptional cast with Toti dal Monte in the role of Rosina. Others who will be heard in the anni- versary performance include Glaessens, Hackett, Rimini. Lazzari and Trevisan; Moranzoni conducting. Saturdav matinee brings a repitition of "Der Rosenkavalier" and Saturday night, November 28, will introduce at popular prices "Aida," an unusual treat. TO JOURNEY AROUND WORLD Mrs. Warren Pease, 320 Leicester road, and her daughter, Mrs. Calvin Burghalter, (Beatrice Pease) leave Sat- urday for an extended trip around the world. They are sailing from New York November 24, on the Belgenland, for the Orient by way of the Panama canal. -- -- Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Anderson of 328 Linden street, are entertaining at din- ner and bridge this evening. -- Mrs. Frank Stover of Hubbard Woods, entertained one of the Kenil- worth sewing clubs Friday. | | Methodists to Attend Big Chicago Banquet Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes and other prominent Wilmette Methodists will attend the Social Union banquet of the denomination to be held at the Sherman hotel, Chicago, Monday eve- | ning, November 30, at 6:30 o'clock. Representatives of the Board of] Home Missions will also attend the | dinner, together with about 1,000 lay | members of the church. Harry Mons of Kenilworth has charge of reserva- tions for the Wilmette Methodists who expect to participate in the meeting. Mrs. John Buckingham of Win- netka and Mrs. Richard Fletcher of Hubbard Woods are in Paris, France.
