ie November 28, 1925 WINNETKA TALK Fine Program Marks Presidents' Day at the Wilmette Club The Woman's Club of Wilmette will hold its regular meeting Wednesday, December 2, in honor of its past presi- dents. Mrs. Harold B. Maryott will inter- pret Cadman's opera, ""Shanewis," and will preface it with a talk on "American Folk Songs." Mrs. Maryott will be assisted by Miss Henrietta Blackwell, contralto, who will sing negro spirit- uals and selections from the opera. Following the morning session which opens at 11, a 1 o'clock luncheon will precede the afternoon program. Demeta Vaka (Mrs. Kenneth Brown) will be the speaker of the afternoon and Joel Lay will sing a group of songs. Demetra Vaka was born in Constan- tinople and was a student both there and in Paris. Near East intrigues were the daily bread of her youth and to these old world backgrounds, she adds the experience of the new world as a student, teacher, writer, lecturer, and traveler. She has traveled extensively in the East, having entree into circles usually closed to westerners. Her subject will be "In the Heart of the Balkans." The program committee of the Wil- mette Woman's club announces the en- gagement of Joel Lay, baritone, for the meeting of Wednesday afternoon, De- cember 2. It will be remembered that Mr. Lay sang for our club several years ago. Since that time he has been in New York and abroad. During his two years of studying and singing in Eu- rope, he was under the guidance of* some of the most famous masters. He- coached with Madame Weinschenk of the Opera Comique who taught Mary Garden and Muratore; studied at the school of Jean de Reszke and was a pupil of Maestro Voghera, teacher of Caruso in Milan, Italy. Since his return to the "States" Mr. Lay's time has been occupied with the singing of concerts and recitals in the East and Middle West. Critics everywhere acclaim him a young artist of the first rank. His pro- grams have a popular appeal which as- sures him of the unfailing interest of the public and his appearance at this time is a distinct attribute to the fine programs arranged for this season.
