20 WINNETKA TALK December 5, 1925 Outdriving Regulations New Menace in Motoring Outdriving traffic regulations, a new menace in motoring, is branded as an increasing cause of automobile ac- cidents by Charles M. Hayes, president of the Chicago Motor club. By outdriving traffic regulations, he explains, is meant the habit of driving a car on the assumption that what isn't seen, or what hasn't happened, will be entirely favorable. Mr. Hayes placed the new hazard in a class with the habit of outdriving brakes and headlights. In the case of headlights, he points out, the habit is to assume that if the road is clear with- in the area illuminated there will be no more immediate danger just be- yond. "The newest evil in driving is the practice of outdriving the traffic reg- ulations and directions," says Mr. Hayes. "Observation made at prin- cipal points about Chicago show that there is a pronounced tendency to take too much for granted. If the auto- mobile driver sees the stop-go sign turned in his favor he assumes no pedestrians will get into his way. In other words, he proceeds to drive fas- ter than the possibilities warrant. "Just because a traffic officer waves to a motorist to come on is no reason why the speed of the car should be too fast for a quick and safe stop should any other vehicles disregard the officer's directions and come tearing out of a side street. Many local driv- ers have been observed to handle their cars at intersections just as though what the traffic officer ordered would be obeyed by everybody and as though nothing in the way of a hazard could lurk just outside the immediate sphere of the traffic direction. "The situation is identically the same as driving in such a way as to require the brakes to work perfectly for every i stop. There is no provision for a suit- able margin of safety." Dr. H. C. Wilson Called to St. Paul Pastorate Dr. Harry C. Wilson of Evanston, well known to north shore Methodists, has been appointed pastor of Trinity Methodist church at St. Paul, Minn. Dr. Wilson, a veteran minister in the Methodist denomination, has been par- ticularly active in the development of a system of summer schools and standard training schools now used extensively in the denomination. He was appointed superintendent of the division of Local school Administra- tion, which position he has held up to the time of his appointment to the St. Paul pastorate. FS ---- Mrs. J.
