December 12, 1925 WINNETKA TALK 23 Presidents' Day at- Wilmette Club Is a Great Success Past presidents of the Woman's club of Wilmette were guests of honor at the last regular meeting, Wednesday, December 2. Those who were able to | attend were Mrs. H. B. Gates, Mrs Helen S. Gage, Mrs. Donald M. Gal- lie, Mrs. John Clark Baker, Mrs. John | C. Mannerud, and Mrs. R. E. P. Kline. Preceding the afternoon's program, Mrs. N. P. Colwell, the president, in- troduced the guests of honor and each | gave a short talk showing the growth and progress of the club since its in- ception. The speaker of the afternoon, Dem- etra Vaka (Mrs. Kenneth Brown) gave a very fine address, "The Romance of the Balkans." Mims. Brown has a charming personality and a beautiful voice which carried her message to a large and enthusiastic audience. She spoke with a sincere understanding of the civilization of the Balkans and dramatically led her audience from Montenegro to Serbia, showing the merits and beauties of each. The cos- tumes of these countries which she displayed added charm to her subject | and showed how versatile a Balkan woman can be in her wardrobe. Preceding her talk, Joel Lay, the baritone, gave a group of songs, which included, among others, "Tu sola a me rimani o Poesia" (Chatterton) Leoncavallo, and "Songs of the Open," La Forge. His rich lovely voice merits the highest praise, which he received. WINS HONOR RANK Rockwell Ryerson of Wilmette has been awarded Phi Beta Kappa honors at Northwestern university, it was an- nounced this week. He enjoyed this distinction with seven other students of the university. This group will be augmented later in the school year when additional Phi Beta Kanna nominees will be announced. Mr. Ryerson is a graduate of New Trier High .school. Dudley Crafts Watson to Lecture at Library Club Dudley Crafts Watson, noted both as an artist and a clever speaker, will give the program at the Woman's Li- [brary club Thursday afternoon, De- | cember 17, at 2:30 o'clock. His sub | ject is to be "Art and the Child." Mr. Watson, who is connected with the Art Institute, spoke at the club last year, and is appearing again this sea- son at the request of many of the smembers who heard him last year. His talk Thursday will be of especial in- terest to the young mothers who are | members of the club. . Mrs. Donald M. Gallie, Jr., is hostess during the month of December. MEETS TODAY The regular monthly meeting of the Friends in Council of Evanston will | be held Friday, December 11, at the Orrington hotel. The subject to be discussed will be "American Poetry," and the speakers will be Mrs. Lewis A. Peck and Mrs. Andrew MacLeish.
