EVANSTON -- Phone Greenleaf 6194 -- Begin Work on Stadium for Purple This Spring Northwestern university is planning to break the first ground for its pro- posed new athletic stadium as early in the spring as the weather will per- mit. Work will then proceed rapidly and it is confidently believed that the initial structure of two decks with 49,000 permanent seats will be com- pleted by the opening of the football season in the fall. The Purple stadium is planned as a three-decker and is so shown in the photographs, but due to the rigid zon- ing ordinance existent in the City of Evanston only two decks, 80 feet in height, will be constructed at this time. The third deck will be added, with the consent of the Evanston city fathers, when the need is acute. The three- decker, however, is the stadium as planned by James Gamble Rogers, New York architect, and Gavin Had- den, stadium engineer. When entirely finished the structure will be 126 feet high, with a total seating capacity, in- cluding end seats, of about 75,000. Next fall, when the big game brings an un- usual demand for tickets, the two- decker stadium probably will be taxed to capacity, in which event temporary end seats to accommodate at least 6,000 will be erected.
