In honor of Winifred Smith, debutante daughter of Walter B. Smith, a special performance of "The Romantic Lady" will be given. Miss Buckingham has invited not only the young friends of Miss Smith, but old time friends of her own, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Byron Smith, and there will be a large company of Win- netkans present. Miss Buckingham is just now en- gaged with the building of a great fountain in Grant Park as a memorial to her brother, the late Clarence Buck- ingham, who contributed so generously to the development of the Art Insti- tute. VASSAR HOUSE TO OPEN A group of clever Vassar girls are opening Vassar House, a restaurant on Erie street, just east of Michigan ave- nue, the profits from which are to be devoted to answering the calls Vassar makes on its alumnae. Mrs. Howard Linn is in charge of the decorating of the rooms in a most alluring gay col- ored, French peasant style. On the board of directors and among those living on the north shore, who are deeply interested are Mrs. W. Dow Harvey, Mrs. Arthur Wakeley, Ralph Renwick, Mrs. Andrew MacLeish, and Mrs. Donald Jeffris. YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETE The annual contest for young artists conducted by the Society of American Musicians with the cooperation of the Orchestra association, is announced by Howard Wells, director, for Sunday afternoon, January 17, at Orchestra hall at 2 o'clock. Two violinists, three pianists, three female, and four male singers will compete for appearance with the Chicago Symphony orchestra as soloists at the popular concerts next season.
