February 13, 1926 WINNETKA TALK --_ WANTS U.S. AIDFOR | BABIES OF ILLINOIS Urges Women to Work for Pas- | sage of Sheppard-Towner Act to Save Babies Women of Winnetka were urged to | write Representative Carl Chindblom | of this district requesting his support | for re-appointment under the Shep- pard-Towner Act by Miss Sara Place, president of the Illinois State Nurses' | association, who spoke before members of the Winnetka League of Women | Voters, at the Community House last Monday. "The death rate of babies in Chicago is 174 per cent," said Miss Place. "In many outlying districts of the state it runs as high as 10 or 11 per cent. In a few places it is 15 and 16 per cent. In practically every case where the per- centage is high it is because women do not know where to get information and medical aid during pregnancy and childbirth. The mothers of children in every enlightened community must work together in order to get the Shep- pard-Towner act put in force here, and thus prevent, through knowledge, the loss of many thousands of babies every vear. Illustrates Talk Miss Place illustrated her talk with a film, "Well Born," which was pre- pared by the Children's Bureau to be shown in the rural districts. This film contrasts the ease with which the voung city mother can get medical care and information with the difficulties the farmer's wife has in overcoming all the old wives tales of wrong information brought to her by gossiping neigh- bors. Miss Place urged those present to write their representative at- Washing- ton asking him to work for national re-appropriation of the Sheppard- Towner act. at this sesion of Congress as the first step toward getting the act established in Illinois. The five year national appropriation passed in 1921 expires this spring, she said. Other Women Speak Mrs. Walter Benson, president of the Winnetka League of Women Voters, announced that Mrs. John Vander Vries had been elected to represent Winnetka at the annual convention of the National League of Women Voters. Miss "Florence Harrison, regional | secretary of the league, spoke briefly | on the value of the bill. She pointed out that the chief argument being used | against the Sheppard-Towner act was | that against federal aid in general, but that as Illinois has already accepted a {large amount of federal aid annually for use on roads, that argument is not Mrs. William Hale spoke | briefly on the league's satisfaction that the United States had entered the | World Court.
