Director of Chicago Commons to Speak at the Woman's Society will have as its guests, Miss Lea D. Taylor, head resident and director of Chicago Commons, Miss Mabel Haw- kins and Miss Grace LaRocca. As- sembly hour will be at 10 o'clock in the morning, with sewing and social greet- ings. At the luncheon served at 12:15, Miss Taylor will tell of the work done at the Commons in which Winnetka is so definitely interested, both on ac- count of its Welfare Centre located there, and because the women of the church sew regularly for the children of the kindergarten, the children of the Church school send their Christmas gifts there, and make an annual con- tribution of money as a mission offer- ing. Moreover, many circles entertain groups of mothers and children from the Commons during the summer time, so that Winnetka is very definitely interested in Chicago Commons. For that reason this program in March will be an opportunity for many to meet Miss Taylor and learn more about Chicago Commons and its work. The Current Events class will meet Friday, March 5, at 2:30 o'clock, with Mrs. C. H. Allen, 1347 Scott avenue. Thomas J. McKearnan, of 333 Sheridan road, Winnetka, is now con- tracting for the erection of a beautiful country home, of the French chateau type, which will cost, it is said, in the neighborhood of $35,000. It will be lo- cated on a nicely wooded tract of about two acres, and adjacent to it, Mr. McKearnan's brother, Edmund Mec- Kearnan, of Chicago, will build a fine home of the Swiss Chalet type costing, it is said, around $25,000. The latter will be located on a one-acre tract of the wooded section. It is the plan of Mr. and Mrs. John O'Neil, also of Chicago, and the parents of Mrs. Thomas J. McKearnan and Mrs. Ed- mund McKearnan to build in the same vicinity, but in all probability a some- what smaller home and the type of which they have not yet determined. These home sites are being taken out of a twenty-acre tract which Thomas McKearnan purchased some time ago of Mrs. Frances Ward, of 1001 Mich- igan avenue, Wilmette, and who still owns sixty-five acres of this valuable holding. Mrs. Ward's keen perception of the future development of this par- ticular section prompted her to make her original investment here about two i years ago, when she purchased the { William Lass thirty-five acre tract, and no later than last October, some time "after disposing of her interest in the twenty acres to Mr. McKearnan she purchased the Herman Stoll thirty acres. The purchase and sale price of these tracts are not revealed, but the spread between the high and the low is said to be quite large and indicates the ra- pidity with which all acreage lying west of the north shore towns has grown and is growing into value, while the an- nouncement of the building plans of the McKearnans forcefully evidences the high type of development already un- derway in various sections thereof. Scott Nearing Speaks Before Women's Group On Tuesday, March 2, at the Win- netka Woman's club, the civic and phil- anthropy department will present Scott Nearing, who has recently returned from Russia. Mr. Nearing will talk on "What I Saw in Russia." All the world is interested in what Russia is doing or is about to do and information from so brilliant a speaker should be most satisfying. Mr. Nearing is a former Professor of Economics at Swarthmore and Penn- sylvania, and is now a writer and lec- turer. : His talk will mark the occasion of an open meeting and all residents of Win- netka who are interested in Mr. Near- ing and what he has to say, are invited to the club.
