March 6, 1926 WINNETKA TALK At Woman's Club A remarkably keen interest was shown by the members of the Win- netka Woman's club and their guests, in the talk by Scott Nearing on his impressions of the new world, named Russia. Under the soviet government. Mr. Nearing went to Russia last year to study the system of education, He visited 70 schoors ranging from kindergarten to universities, and be- came thoroughly convinced that their methods are superior to any in the world. As yet the system has only been put into practice in a very lim- ited area, he stated. Mr. Nearing al- so believes the health program to be a most remarkable plan. The people have free doctors, nurses, and hospi- tal service. Special attention is given to pre-natal care, co-operative housing al dining rooms, and to the care and feeding of children during the pre-school age. As the masses of the older generation cannot read or write, the propaganda for the health pro- gram is carried on by picture. A definite opportunity is also given the working women to organize for club and civic work. The soviet gov- ernment has made the masses of wo- men legally and economically the equal of men, There is no sex distinction and the women receive the same wages as men. Women occupy some of the highest positions in educational insti- tutions, and also 20 percent of the leg- islative positions. Mr. Nearing spoke with much feel- ing of the cultural life of the Russians in the organized centers. Miss Ruth Matz announced that the next regular meeting of the club will be a musicale on March 16. An enjoyable tea followed Mr. Near- ing's talk. The hostesses for the day | Sorority Plans a Benefit Program | of Unusual Charm | Zeta Phi Eta, sorority of professional | speech and dramatics, has arranged a | delightful program as a benefit March | 10, at the Evanston Woman's club, at | 8:15 o'clock, when Sydney Thompson | will appear in costume in original | plays, mediaeval legends, and old bal- | lads. Arrangements will also be made | for incidental music. Miss Thompson, who is a graduate | of Vassar college, and a former pupil of the famous French actress, Yvette Guilbert, is a dramatist of skill and power, endowed with unusual ability, grace, and charm, according to her critics. Both in this country and in England she has met with remarkable success in presentation of the legends and ballads of the olden times. In her original plays, she takes the part of | one character and so visualizes the others, that the action of the play pas- ses clearly before the audience. The | old ballads she has selected from va- rious historic and literary sources, and are interpreted as drama. The costumes are of the period of the country and are designed from old prints. The patrons for the affair are Dr. and Mrs. Robert McLean Cummock, Mr. and Mrs. Calrion DeWitt Hardy, Mr. and Mrs. Leon D. McKendry, Mr. and Mrs. Lew Sarett, Charles H. Bart- lett, Alexander Dean, and Theodore Hinckley. were Mrs. C, Durand Allen, Mrs. Law- rence C. Janney, Mrs. Robert McKis- son, Mrs. William B. Moulton, Mrs. James A. Richards, and Mrs. Wallace D.
