H. No, men are not descended from monkeys! Did you think they were? At the Sunday Evening club last week Mr. Graeme Canning showed how this popular conception of evolution was a misinterpretation of the Darwinian theory. He explained that, according to the modern evolutionary theory, all life has evolved from life in its simplest form. and that men and apes are de- scendants of a common ancestor. He described many interesting arche- ological discoveries which seem to veri- fy this theory. Mr. Canning. also brought out the fact that belief in evo- lution need in no way conflict with be- lief in God as the creator of the world. At next week's meeting of the club there will be a musical program which promises to be unusually fine. Three north shore musicians have been asked to take part. Miss Nina Babcock, mu- sic instructor at the North Shore Coun- try Day School and Miss Pauline Man- chester of Glencoe will each play sev- eral piano compositions and Miss Kath- erine Hamilton of Winnetka will give two groups of violin numbers: All who are interested are urged to be present. Supper will be served at 6:30 o'clock in the evening in the Camp Fire room. On Sunday, March 21, Miss Laura Ullrich, instructor in history at New Trier High school, will speak on the subject "The United States' Policy in the Caribbean." GROUP MEETS MONDAY The North End Branch of Friends of Chicago Junior school for boys will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Sovereign hotel Monday, March 15, Arthur M. Millard presiding. Paul Hutchinson to Speak Before Woman's Society (Contibuted) Paul Hutchinson, of Winnetka, au- thor of "China's Real Revolution," "The Next Step," "The Spread of Christian- ity," and of various articles in the At- lantic Monthly, is not a prophet with- out honor to his own country. He is widely known by his writing, by his management of The Christian Century, one of the outstanding religious week- lies of the day, and is a member of the "Institute of Pacific Relations" (organ- ized on the plan of the Williamstown Institute of Political Science. This po- sition, more than any other, makes him pre-eminently fitted to speak on "In- ter-racial Problems of the Pacific Ba- sin. This subject he will discuss Wednes- day, March 17, at 1 o'clock, in Matz hall, at Community House. He speaks under the auspices of The World Friendship Committee of the Congrega- tional Woman's society. In the morn- ing the committee has secured Prof. Floyd Black of Robert college, Con- stantinople. Professor Black has jujst been elected president of the American School of Sofia, Bulgaria. Professor Black is especially well acquainted with the political educational and religious history of both Turkey and Bulgaria. Two such men in one day is a wonder- ful achievement. Come and be sure to bring a friend who will enjoy this privi- lege. Candidates Give Views at Schmidt Booster Session The Oscar W.
