---- wi z= March 20, 1926 WINNETKA TALK CHURCH KINDERGARTEN HAS TRAINED LEADER Miss Mildred Mack, Graduate Kindergartner, Tells of Work in Congregational Church The Kindergarten department of | the Winnetka Congregational Church school includes children from 4 to 6 | years of age. The great thought run- ning through the program for the little ones is the development of the thought | of the fatherhood of God and His love for all. Miss Mildred Mack is director of this | department. Miss Mack is a trained | Kindergartner having graduated from | the National Kindergarten college. She also had special training in Church School Kindergarten under Mrs. Flor- ence Capron. In talking about the work of the Church Kindergarten, Miss Mack said: "Our method of presentation of the Fatherhood of God and His great love for all, must naturally be presented through thoughts and ideas within the child's understanding. We do this through hymns, verses, stories and pic- tures, dealing chiefly with subjects fam- iliar to the child and try to lead the child little by little." Program Is Varied When asked, "do you use Bible stories, exclusively ?""--Miss Mack said, "no, we feel that comparatively few of the Bible stories are suited for such little children. Through nature stories and occasional fairy stories we can pre- sent idols and ideals that would be diffi- cult to present in other ways. Each story that is told, each song that is sung, each picture that is pasted has a thought behind it that should reach the child and make its impression. "Our program follows closely the program that has been recognized by the best Kindergarten methods. A short conversation period and relaxation period, precede the quiet music and prayer and hymn which opens our serv- ice. We then sing songs and present ideas according to the season and the special thought for the morning. "Our march follows, sometimes into the church auditorium. It is wonder- ful to see the reverent attitude with which these small children go into 'God's house' as we like to call it. At the time of the march, the offering is taken. We make this very important. We impress upon the child the beauty of giving and the happiness we bring to ourselves and to others through our gifts. Have Own Service "Our story follows, after which the little ones go to tables for such work as pasting of pictures, free hand draw- ing, etc. This breaks the department into small groups. Before dismissal they all assemble for their goodbye song and short prayer." ; Miss Mack went on to say "We like to speak of our Kindergarten hour as | the church service for little children. A service which is adapted to their life Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bemis of Ards- ley road have announced the birth of | a daughter at the Evanston hospital, | and develops reverence of attitude." her name to be Betty Johnson Bemis.
