Copies of the complete letters of all candidates replying to the league's questionaire may be obtained at Com- munity House on Monday, April 12. CANDIDATES FOR SHERIFF Patrick J. Carr Democrat--Real estate. Present county treasurer. Grammer school and De La Salle Institute. Platform: "I believe that the office of sheriff of Cook County presents great possibili- ties for public service in that it affords an opporunity of originating and main- taining a vigorous campaign to make the highways of the County safe for every man, woman, and child, and as a means to that end I advocate the establishment of an efficient motorized patrol of the highways. The comple- tion of the new county jail will also permit of the execution of some of my ideas of handling prisoners await- ing trial with humaneness but without maudlin sympathy. The enlarged quarters will prevent the present over- crowding and enable the jailer proper- ly to separate the less serious from the more heinous offenders and thus pre- vent the jail itself from becoming a breeding place of crime. I am also of the determined opinion that if prisoners held for trial are given some definite occupatign or schooling, or both, they are less of a menace to the administration of the jail." "I fa- vor the appointment of employes by a civil service examination for fitness." "In addition to the prosecution in the courts of those keepers of road- houses which violate the law, T will advocate an increase in the number of patrolmen under the direction of the Sheriff, and through them will maintain a vigilant inspection of road- houses for the purpose of reporting violations to the Board of County Commissioners and asking for the Ie: vocation of the licenses of such vio- lators."
