Smith He Will Fight for Your Interests at Washington Not Merely Sing in the "Yes, Yes" Chorus The overwhelming need of Illinois at Washington just now is aggressive, hard hitting, determined leadership in behalf of the things this state must have. Its farmers need the backing of intelligent federal legis- lation if they are to get a fair return for their labor. The children of its cities must be assured pure milk, and the dairymen must be aided to provide it for them. Waterways must be developed, especially the lakes to the gulf waterway, that will mean much to the commercial development of the entire middle west. Adequate postal facilities must be provided. For many years this state has been a neglected step-child in the family of states. Other common- wealths whose needs were less have received much more through the activity of persistent and energetic spokesmen. Frank L. Smith has the knowledge, the training and the "get there" qual- ities required to gain re- sults. In thirty years of out- standing public leadership in this state he has proven himself a first rate fight- ing man. He has shown that he is loyal through and through to the people of Illinois. ~~ As republican state chairman he has piloted his party in many campaigns to the most overwhelming victories it has ever gained. His knowledge and his sympathies are broad enough to reach all the elements in the population of this the third state in the union. He is a practical farmer, managing his own farm. He knows from his own experience the problems of the city worker and the community school teacher. He FRANK L. SMITH has raised himself by his own efforts from humble circum- stances to a financial competence. He has traveled around the world and knows from first hand observation the dangers which this nation must avoid in its international policies. As chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission he has fought and won the battles of hundreds of thousands of customers of public service corporations. He has forced on the public utility companies in this state the policy of service to the public first. More than that he has proved that the adoption of such a policy pays. When, early in the cam- paign, his opponents criti- cized him for his outspoken advocacy of policies sup- ported by the people of Illi- nois, he said: "My first duty, when I go to Washington, will be to represent as faithfully as my abilities permit the people of the state whose servant I am. In doing so I will give better service both to my party and to the present administration than I would by a weak acquiescence in policies which I know to be against the interests and wishes of my constituents. "The republican party has been a great power in this nation because it has always had in it men of strong convictions who were ready to fight energetically for their be- liefs. Their earnestness and sincerity has given the party vigor and in- spired a degree of public confidence that has kept it a leader in national affairs. "The true friends of the party are those who strive to the utmost to keep its policies in close touch with the aspirations of the people they have been elected to represent." : NOMINATE FRANK L. SMITH FOR UNITED STATES SENATOR At the Republican Primary April 13 and Put Illinois Back Among the Leaders of the Nation "To keep out of the League of Nations we must keep out of the World Court."
