a May 1, 1926 WINNETKA TALK GLIMPSES OLD SPAIN Wilmette Student F Finds Donkeys and Fords Principal Modes of Convey- ance wmultor"s Note: Interesting letters have been received by Mrs. Edward H. Yonkers, Wilmette resident, from her son, Eaw ard H. Yonkers, Jr., who is attending the Sorbonne, Paris. Ed- ward has just returned to Paris from Spain, where he made a tour visiting the principle cities. The following let- ter written at Carcassonne, gives a glimpse of the Spanish city of Toledo: | "Safe within the walls of this famous | old city. The day after I wrote my last letter we went to Toledo, one of the oldest cities in Europe. It is about fifty miles south of Madrid. The most interesting thing about it is that it has been in the hands of so many peoples, races, and civilizations. This fact is expressed clearly in the great melange of architectural types found among its buildings--Roman, Mauresque, Greek, Gothic, Spanish--the Orient and the Occident interlaced in a charming man- ner. "The winding streets leading to the portals of its ancient walls are filled with peasants walking beside or riding on little donkeys ladened with goods. These little donkeys seem to be the sole mode of transportation aside from a few Fords. "We spent several hours wandering about the crooked, narrow streets find- ing at every turn a picture. Some- times it would be an old woman with a bundle of washing balanced on her head, the bundle being nearly as large as she, or it might be a young girl with an earthen jar, also balanced on her head. Then frequently we would stop to peek through a doorway with its ancient studded door ajar, disclosing a charming patico, brightened by the gleam of a palm and the purple or white of a tree in blossom. ; "Madrid is a very modern city--new, luxurious buildings, wide parkways, large parks. We found nothing of un- usual interest there except the people. Court Rules for Forest Preserve in Washburn Case The Forest Preserve board of Cook county won a decisive victory in the Superior court this week when Judge McKinley ruled for the Forest Pre- | serve body in the so-called Washburn case, a ruling which emphasizes the fact that the Forest Preserves right- fully belong to the people as public park land. The case in point refers to the at- tempt of one Washburn, who -wns Skokie land, to enjoin the Forest Pre- serve board from purchasing untimber- ed property west of Winnetka and Glencoe. The Eorest Preserve board had been upheld in the lower courts, only to encounter a reversal in the Illi- nois Supreme court, which body ordered the case remanded to the lower courts for trial on its merits. This trial resulted in Judge McKinley's decision this week. In his opinion Judge McKinley as- serted that the Forest Preserve board should be permitted to acquire the tree- less portion of the Skokie because of the unique character of the country, its remarkable flora and fauna and its consequent priceless value to the peo- ple of Cook county. Arguments for the Forest Preserve board were presented by experts from the University of Illinois and Chicago university who had made a study of the territory in question.
