E. D. The big thing, the one | now at New Trier, is, of course, the | pageant, to be given June 14 and 15. Rehearsals have begun. So far, only those training the many dancers who | are to appear in the beautiful produc- tion have been worked on much, but dramatic rehearsals will begin soon. The pageant is called "Enlighten- ment," and tends to portray in al- legorical fantasy, the history of New Trier. The story is somewhat like this, a New Trier brother and sister are discovered at the rising of the first curtain, preparing their home- work. They begin to talk and wonder over the history of their school. In their need of information, Enlighten- ment appears to them, and promises to show them in pageant the birth and thing, | For the children, Enlightenment next opens before them a scene pic- turing the first settler days. The father, Ignorance, his wife, Vision, and their children are outside a rude, log cabin. A babe lies sleeping in its cradle. The father dreams, and in his dream, realizes that he, Ignorance, must sacrifice his life in order that this babe, Education, may live, grow and rule. Recall Early Days The second act has to do with the founding of New Trier. The audi- ence is shown the first meeting of the Board of Education puzzling over the building of the new high school. The president of the board, with a sweep- ing gesture, points to his "vision" of New Trier, and this vision is seen through the window of the room in which the Board is in conference. Convinced, all the rest of the mem- struments, which to them, portend the coming of man in earnest. Scene three presents the march of the graduating classes, each class from that of 1901, which consisted of but two members, to that of 1926, contain- ing something near 250 members, is represented in the march, each repre- sentative receiving his diploma from his Alma Mater. The last act takes place, so to speak, upon the campus of the high school where King Thought holds court to consider the candidates for entrance into the school curriculum. Every de- partment--languages, music, science, mathematics, business and the many, many others--is represented in ap- propriately suggestive garb. Besides, several abstract characters are repre- sented, such as Tardiness. All the good are accepted into the curriculum, while the few others are rejected by the development of the school they !bers of the Board sign the necessary | King Thought. Then takes place a queer dance of figures known as Dis- tractions, but they are dispelled from the court. Now the extra-curricular activities beg admittance and are pre- sented to King Thought. Every club, each type of athletics, appears as does a figure called Co-operation. When A they have been accepted, a great dis- | turbance is heard, which turns out to i be the age-old struggle between the New Ideas and the Old Ideas. A dance takes place, which finally ends with the front row composed of some of each. Portray Future Enlightenment then calls forth Fu- ture, for the children who beg her to tell them of what is to come to New Trier. This she cannot do, but intro- duces to them her two daughters, twins, Progress and Retrogression, and asks that the two students choose which of her two daughters they wish to abide with New Trier. They choose Prog- ress. The King declares the opening of the Inaugural March to the main building which all the curriculum and extra-curricular activities are to oc- cupy, "God willing, for another quarter of a century." An impressive and in- spiring march begins, led by King Thought, the children, Progress and Enlightenment, and brought to a close by Father Time. Slowly they pass down the central aisle of the audi- { torium and out. So closes the pageant. It can easily be seen what a stupen- dous undertaking the pageant will be, the beauty and deep significance of Liberty ROCLAIM liberty throughout all the land, unto all the inhabitants thereof --this was the legend inscribed on what was later to be known as the Liberty Bell, when it was recast in Philadelphia in 1753. Twenty-three years later this pro- phetic admonition was carried out when the now historic bell heralded the adop- tion of the Declaration of Independence. A century after this assertion of American liberty, Alexander Graham Bell gave to America and to the world, in the telephone, an instrumentality of a new form of freedom. Limitations which had confined the scope of the spoken word were swept away. Doors it all, indeed worthy to mark the suc- of isolation were thrown open.
