May 29, 1926 WINNETKA STALK 35 TWO NOTED ORGANISTS GIVE JOINT RECITAL Stanley Martin and S. E. Gruen- stein to Give Vesper Program at Baptist Church fhe fifth and final Vesper Concert, in the series given since the first of the year, will be an event Sunday afternoon, May 30, at 4 o'clock, in the Wilmette Baptist church. These pro- grams, of interest to music-lovers gen- erally on the north shore, have been featured by the presence of some of the most distinguished organists of the Chicago district. William H. Barnes, organist of the Baptist church, is responsible for bringing this fine array of talent to the village. As one of the foremost masters of the organ himself, he is personally acquainted with all of the other masters who have appeared from month to month. Large audiences have already enjoyed the outstanding programs given by J. Lewis Browne, Clarence Eddy and Edwin Stanley Seder. This Sunday, at the Vesper hour, Stanley Martin of Evanston, and S. E. Gruenstein of Lake Forest, will appear in a joint organ recital. Each artist will share half of the program. Well-Known Locally Neither of these well-known organ- ists need an introduction to north shore audiences. For a number of years Mr. Martin, who is organist of St. Mark's church, Evanston, and also of the Chicago Sunday Evening club, re- sided in Wilmette. He is professor of organ at Northwestern university and a general favorite. Tens of thousands of radio enthusiasts know of the skill of Mr. Martin, as the result of the broadcasting of the Sunday Evening club programs each week. Mr. Martin at present is dean of the Illinois: chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Mr. Barnes has announced that the program to be given Sunday is sponsored by the guild of organists, which makes the event one of more than passing in- terest. Honored by Church Last year Mr. Gruenstein gave a recital at the Wilmette Baptist church and won enduring recognition of his great skill and artistry. He is a former dean of the Illinois chapter of the guild. So it means that two prom- inent figures in the organization, de- voted to advancement of the profes- sion of the church organist, will ap- pear for the delight of the hundreds who are expected to be on hand at 4 o'clock Sunday. For thirty-five years Mr. Gruenstein has been organist of the Presbyterian church of Lake Forest. Recently his congregation presented him with a substantial purse in recognition of his most unusual record. He is also the editor of "Diapason," a monthly journal for organists.
