30 WINNETKA TALK June 12, 1926 "A friend of mine bought some recently," many young women tell us. "I could hardiy believe they cost only a dollar. And she says they're wearing wonderfully." A New Process of Construction Now Brings to You | A Superior Chiffon Hose Priced as Low as $1 Nor UNTIL the manufacture of the hose we are now offering, was a really satisfactory method of making a seamless foot perfected. It is a much less expensive process than making a seamed foot and the cost saved in the construction is put into the quality. That's why we were able to secure such a remarkably fine hose to sell at a dollar. The woman with sensitive feet, the one who has been searching so long for a seamless foot that fits, will be glad to know these points about our new dollar hose: 1. They are silk chiffon to the welt and therefore may be worn with short skirts or rolled without bulkiness. 2. They are smart looking be- 1 cause they are smoothly 4 and finely knit of pure silk. 3. They fit in calf, ankle, in- step and toe. And because they fit they wear. 4. There is plenty of "stretch" in the fine lisle garter top. We carry these hose regularly in white--moonlight-- shadow--piping rock--grain--biscuit--lariat--ecstasy-- rose taupe--shell--French nude. A Greater Store for Greater Evanston The Gates of Treves 1-3 LAER, BLS RR 2] [| 4 - (From The Trevian, New Trier Annual for 1909) The City of Treves or Trier, which is the mother of our New Trier, is in the Rhine Province, Prussia, on the Moselle river. It is said to be the oldest city of Germany and certainly contains more Roman antiquities than any other city in Northern Europe. Here a settlement was probably found- ed by Augustus in the territory of the Treveri, a tribe of Belgic Gauls that had been conquered by Caesar. Dur- ing the period of the Empire it was one of the most important of the provincial cities. One of the most interesting of the old Roman relics is the Porta Nigra, the picture of which appears on our school seal. This is a fortified city gate flanked by two towers. It is three stories high, has two gateways 1680S CHICAGO AVE. EVANSTON a and is constructed of huge blocks of sandstone blackened with age. The structure belongs to the third century of our era. In the eleventh century the east tower was occupied by a Greek hermit named Simeon. On his death it was converted into two churches, one above the other. The cathedral, the nucleus of which was a basilica erected by Valentinian, I, probably as a market, is one of the oldest churches in Germany. The building contains many relics, among them the famous seamless or Holy Coat, said to have been worn by Jesus Christ. According to the legend the Empress Helena brought it to Treves in 1106. In the sixteenth century it became a very fruitful source of revenue. It is said to have attracted a million and a half pilgrims. The Roman palace is now only a picturesque ruin, but the Amphitheater is still in excellent preservation. The east half is built into the rocky side of a hill. The gateways are at the north and south ends, each having three openings, the center one leading to the arena, those at the sides to the seats, which accommodated seven or eight thousand spectators. The dens for the wild beasts and the chambers for the gladiators are still traceable. It is here that Constantine is said to have had several thousand Franks with their leaders torn to pieces by the wild beasts. The Roman Baths evidently formed an imposing structure. The position of the baths, the frigidarium, the tepi- darium and the caldarium, the heating apparatus and other parts of the build- ing can still be traced. T.N.T.
