She said that at first she had no intention of teaching at New Trier, and when her father suggested to her that she teach at the school, which was just being built, she jokingly re- plied, "Oh, I don't want to teach in a little country school!" One of her main interests in the out- side activities at New Trier when she first taught there was dramatics. Among the plays which she coached were "The Rivals," and "She Stoops to Conquer." The latter was so suc- cessful that the performance was re- peated at the Kenilworth club Assemb- ly hall. When she was asked about the changes which had occurred in the quarter of a century in connection with New Trier, Miss Burchard answered: "If I were to be transported back there in those times, I don't think it would be much different than it is now." Stamp Collectors Have Own Club at New Trier The New Trier High school Stamp and Coin club is made up of those students who are enthusiasts in that line. It holds regular meetings once a month, when topics of interest to collectors are discussed. The members have a pleasant time trading specimens and inspecting the collections of each other. It has no regular dues, but the club usually makes up a sum suf- ficient to buy a yearly catalog and a magazine or two. The Best Hot Weather DRINK Everybody agrees that the best drink for the hot days is good, pure milk. In the summer time old and young drink milk from our tuberculin-tested cows. Drink More Milk! PHONE 137 WINNE TK A SANITARY DAIRY CO. Drama Director Miss Elisabeth Stanwood Much of the success of the great Anniversary Pageant is attributable to the skill and energy of Miss Elisabeth Stanwood, supervisor of dramatics at the school, whose work it is to coach all of the dramatic enterprises at New Trier. Under Miss Stanwood's patient direction, drama has found an import- ant place in school activities. Where- as, some few years ago it was difficult to assemble a cast for a play, today the candidates for "try-outs" are more than plentiful. This permits a fine dis- crimination in the selection of players and is one of the distinct reasons for the high standard of excellence of New Trier dramatic presentations. Four major plays are staged by Miss Stanwood each school year, in addi- tion to many other minor perform- ances, and sevaral operettas staged in conjunction with the Music depart- ment of the school, of which Mrs. Homer E. Cotton, is director. New Trier Band Ranks High in State Contests One of the flourishing organizations at New Trier High school is the school band, J. C. Schumacher, director. One of its primary purposes is to furnish music for indoor and outdoor athletics. Free instruction on all band instru- ments is given New Trier students. In addition to many orchestral in- struments which are used in the band, the school owns the following instru- ments: one cornet, two tubas, two baritones, three melaphones, three trombones, a bass saxaphone, a bass drum and snare drums. During the year 1923-24, the citizens of New Trier township furnished the band with attractive uniforms. In the state band contest that year the New Trier band won second place, bringing a handsome trophy to the school. Members of the band received medals. The band was placed high in the state contest this year. G. A. A. Is Big Boost to N. T. Girls' Athletics One of the most important clubs at New Trier High school is the Girls' Athletic association, which was organ- ized for the support and development of girls' athletics. Membership is ac- quired by winning an emblem on a class team, or being on a winning team in other tournaments. The club holds regular business 'meetings and gives several social affairs, such as the masquerade, basketball banquet, and initiation during the school year. Last year the girls gave a vaudeville show, the receipts of which were used for school purposes. A. now has about two hundred members.
