June 26, 1926 WINNETKA. TALK Uncle Sam to Finance Interstate Road System Construction work on the national system of interstate transconti- nental highways is now financed for another three years as the result of the recognition by Congress of the Federal Government's support and obligation to financially these recognized means of communication and transpor- tation, the Chicago Motor club an- nounced this week. Passage of the Dowell bill, authoriz- ing appropriations of $165,000,000 for Federal aid highways for the two year period ending June 30, 1929, definitely assures the middle west the financial as- sistance necessary to permit the con- tinuation of the program of highway construction laid out. Money from previous appropriations is now avail- able for use of the states during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1927. "The overwhelming support given he Dowell bill when it passed the {'Senate last week with only six op- osing votes, definitely establishes the | 'ederal aid principle in highway con- truction and is practical assurance "that when the funds now appropriated ire exhausted, Congress will continue ippropriations until the Federal aid A lighway system is completed," accord- ng to a statement issued yesterday by "harles M. Hayes, president of the "hicago Motor club. The Dowell bill authorizes appropri- tions of $75,000,000 annually for Fed- ral aid highways for each of the ascal years, 1928 and 1929, and also rovides appropriations of $7,500,000 annually for each of these two years for national forest roads and trails.
