August 14, 1926 WINNETKA "TALK Residents Rush to Share Garden Blooms With Unfortunates (Continued from Page 24) branch in Milwaukee and reports glowing success in that city. She is also planning one in Indianapolis. In Winnetka the women who are most interested, and are anxious to interest others, are Mrs. C. C. Daugh- aday, Mrs. Hathaway Watson, 900 Sunset road, and Mrs. Alfred E. Mc- Cordic, 559 Oak street. Mrs. Daugha- day has further announced that the booth will be open every day during the flower and vegetable season, and urges that everyone in Winnetka who has a garden will share it with others. Started by Needleworkers Those of us who are ignorant of the work of the National Plant, Fruit and Flower guild learn that it was organ- ized by Mrs. John Wood Stewart, in- ternationally known and decorated by the French government during the war. Mrs. Stewart is famous for hav- ing founded the Needlework guild of America. When the World war began Mrs. Stewart was in Lyons, France, and it was due to her efforts that the war workrooms and soup kitchens were started. She sent to America for cloth, money and financial aid. Re- turning to America, she turned over her home as a place for canning and preserving jellies and jams, sending over 20,000 glasses of jelly to the boys. She supervised the sewing of clothing and adopted many French war or- phans. And this is the Mrs. Stewart who founded the National Plant Flower and Fruit guild. Chicago suburbs can be a source of real joy to many crippled and sick, and many unable to see a tree or smell a flower. We on the north shore are apt to be spoiled, for flowers are everywhere and trees are common. To quote from a pamphlet issued by the organization, the purpose is to collect the surplus of the gardens, flowers, fruits and vegetables, which is often allowed to go to waste, and to distribute it to the sick, aged and crippled in their homes or in institu- tions and to provide a clearing house service for those who have something to give and those in need. Harry Barnhill Buys Ashland Avenue Tract Harry Barnhill of Wilmette, through the real estate firm of Eddington and Allen, 410 Linden avenue, has pur- chased fifty feet of vacant on Ash- land avenue, on which it is said he plans the erection of a new home in the future. This is one of the nicely wooded lots west of Thirteenth street and in a section in which four new homes have been erected within the last few months. Prudential Insurance Loans Large Sums in June | Continuing its policy of making | mortgage loans on sound real estate security, the Company of America during the month of June loaned a total of $20,- 802,767.50 in this field, according to the George H. Taylor Real Estate Mort- gage company. Of this amount $14,- 807,642.50 was on dwellings and apart- ment houses in the United States and Canada which provided accommoda- tions for 4,412 families, the remainder being advanced on city property other than residences and on farms. An indication of the Prudential's sincereity in the effort to make it possible for the individual of mod- erate income to own his own home is found in the fact that during the first six months of 1926 mortgage loans for such purposes have 'exceeded thoskg made during a similar period of 1925 by more than $20,000,000. From January 1, of this year to June 30 loans were made on 11,241 dwell- ings and 659 apartments to the total of $65,847,400. Through these loans 19,216 families were accommodated with living quarters. The total for the first six months of 1925 was $45,788. - 650, providing 8,018 dwellings and 413 apartments which accommodated 13,- 331 families. Strong Acreage Activity in Quest North Shore Area There appears to be no let-up in activity in acreage transactions west particularly out on Kotz road where values in some instances are said to have reached $3,000 per acre. Dudley Bradstreet of 788 Elm street' Win- netka, reports a recent sale in this section to an undisclosed purchaser, of ten acres, located on Voltz road, west of Kotz road and adjoining the Forest Preserve property. . | Prudential Insurance | Jl 2 TT | A The Georgian Is Cool in Summer When the mercury boils in the thermometer and the humidity outside pants for breath, Georgian apartments are as cool and refreshing as the pine woods of the North.
