E. August 28, 1926 WINNETKA TALK Left Hand Drive on Automobiles One of Ford's Inventions A worn and tattered Ford car cata- log bearing the date of 1908, now in the archives of the Ford Motor Com- pany, graphically illustrates the infant stage of the world's great industry and also provides some interesting comparisons with a number of features of automotive engineering often quot- ed as new developments. Back in 1908 the question of from which side the car should be controlled was regarded as of little importance. Henry Ford, however, recognized the fact that when automobiles became as popular as he intended to make them, safety in traffic would be greatly in- creased by the left hand drive. So, with the advent of the model T, Mr. Ford pioneered the move to popularize this type of control. As the number of automobiles in- creased, other manufacturers Yrecog- nized the soundness of his vision and followed his precedent until within a few years virtually every car made in America was left hand drive. The torque tube drive, now one of the outstanding construction features of many of the finest American and European automobiles, was invented by Henry Ford and applied to the first Ford model T in 1908. The multiple disc clutch is frequently quoted as a "new improvement," yet a multiple disc constantly bathed in oil was one of the features of the 1908 model T. Mrs. W. P. Three cabs have been placed in serv- ice--all metered--and others will be bro\ght to the village in the immediate future, Mr. Merrill explains. It is the purpose of the new taxi company to provide efficient transpor- tation for the Hubbard Woods and south Glencoe are.
