Burgess, 239 Scott ave- nue, for several years a resident of Hubbard Woods, died Saturday, Au- gust 21, after an illness of several months. He is survived by his widow, Lena C. Burgess, a daughter, Raine, 1105 Lake avenue, Wilmette, and a sister, Mrs. William E. Staples of New York City. Born in New Haven, Conn. Mr. Burgess became engaged in the fur business, which had been carried on in his family as far back as the Revo- lutionary war. His father and uncle, known as Burgess and Burgess, were established as Furriers and Hatters in New Haven for thirty-five years. Mr. Burgess was associated with John P. Shayne and company, for fourteen years, later establishing his own business at 29 East Madison street, Chicago. He was a 32nd degree Mason, be- longing to the Winnetka lodge, A. F. and A. M. and a member of the Illi- nois Atheletic club. Masonic services were held at Graceland in the conser- vatory chapel. The remains have been sent to Evergreen cemetery in New Haven, Conn. Mrs. J. Harry Selz entertained the officers of the Service Star legion at luncheon at her home in Glencoe, Monday. She later took her guests to the United States Veterans hospital at North Chicago to inspect, and formal- ly present, the recreation room which the legion has furnished. --Q-- Mr. and Mrs. Howard E. J. Tempas of Hingham, Wis., took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Johannesen, 1524 Asbury avenue, Winnetka, Satur- day, August 28, at 4:30 o'clock. The ceremony was performed by Dr. George MacAdam, pastor of the North Shore Methodist Episcopal church of Glencoe. Mrs. Russell Simms of Valparaiso, Ind., attended Miss Wesner, and Rus- sell Simms acted as best man. Mr. and Mrs. Tempas will make their home in Valparaiso, Ind. Mrs. Hansena Wesner, mother of the bride, and Mrs. Russell Simms, who attended the bride, are cousins of Mrs. Johannesen who has been entertaining the bride and groom, their parents, and the attendants this past week-end.
